Fron your description it sounds like you are listening to your transmission input shaft spinning in its bearings. When you disengage the clutch, the shaft and noise stop. This happens in gear as well but too much else is going on to hear it. If you have a manual transmission car listen carefully for the same sort of thing. It's normal.
All that said...
Check your oil level to rule out that other 1/10,000 chance.

There is a bearing assembly on the end of the clutch shaft that keeps things spinning when you put pressure on the clutch. (pull in the lever) It is in reality a throw-out bearing just as you would have in a car. When static, that is no pressure on it there needs to be enough clearance in the system to not put any pressure on the clutch assembly or you are actually depressing the clutch a bit and that could lead to it slipping and excessive wear on the clutch. So the noise or rattling you hear is the bearing assembly moving around in the clutch cover with the proper clearance necessary to let the clutch FULLY engage. It's quite normal.
