Fuel light and the reserve?

I picked up a 97 ST on Wednesday from a dealer who had filled the tank. Unfortunately there was no owner's manual with it. I am currently waiting for my Clymer's manual to arrive. While riding, (after about 185 miles) the yellow fuel warning light came on. I switched to reserve and within a mile or two, the light came on again. Is this right?

Bump

Hi mate and welcome to the Sprint Forum.

Just bumping you up to the top see if some clever type knows the answer, cos I'm afraid I don't.

I have no idea about the actual circuit on that vintage - indeed I'm surprised there is a reserve function when there is a low level indicator.
However it would make sense to me that there would be a single detector for the gas level and it should matter not whether tank is operating on reserve or main feed - the sender will still be sensing the same level of gas in the tank.
What may be confusing is why it initially went off when switched to reserve; however since it had only just gone on, the level may be marginal towards turning on the light or not. Stopping on a slope for instance while you switched it could have been enough to get it to go off again. A few more miles (and a different orientation) may have been enough to turn it back on again - there is a capacitor delay built in so it doesn't keep going on & off rapidly as the gas level changes due to sloshing etc

I would think you would actually want it to operate like that (with low light on when on reserve), or potential to forget you are already low.

Again - purely speculative on my part, but seems logical

My 05 Sprint the light comes on with about 1 US gallon left. No switch, just a reminder that I have about 40 miles till I'm pushing

On my '95 the low fuel light does stay on after I switch to reserve. There is no connection between the light and the petcock.
