Oil Filter 955i

Hi

Recently I did a 5000 km service on my Sprint ST955i.

In regards to the oil filter I put in a HiFlo HF191 (actually it was a HF204 ? I think, apparently they are the same). I also changed my oil from Motul 5100 to Motul 7100.

The first thing we noticed was how tight the original HiFlo filter had been put on. It had been put on by the shop on its 20,000 km service four months ago. It was incredibly tight - definitely not hand tightened.

So we put on the new filter and oil in. All good for the first two weeks. No oil leaks anywhere. And then last week oil starts leaking from the filter!

Because of how tight the previous filter was I decided to buy a oil filter removal tool - the cup type. So went to the bike shop bought a new HF191 filter (the smart bloke at the shop actually checked the suppliers book first) and bought generic removal tool of ebay.

The tool I bought doesn't fit the HiFLo filter, slightly larger diameter (yes I'm banging my head on the table), I now have two unused filters and a semi new one on the bike that's still leaking.

So does anyone know what cup type tool is needed for the Hiflo HF191? I'm sure I seen on the internet somewhere...

I've read a lot of other threads regarding how tight oil filters are on Triumphs, makes me think people (and I mean shop mechanics) are either putting them on wrong (too tight) or putting them on too tight because they know they leak!

Either way its frustrating.

Ben.

Hi Ben

as a rule I usually buy the stock Triumph part (overpriced) filter when changing oil, but occassionally buy an aftermarket one.

I only ever hand tighten my filters (3 Triumph triples and still own 2).

I have a tool that is not a great fit but works (like a cheap giant socket with a half inch drive hole in it).

I have never had difficulty in removing a filter, dunno about the stories you have heard but that has not been my experience since 2004 of changing oil on these bikes, 955 or 1050.

Of course if you don't smear a bit of oil on the rubber washer and then over tighten the filter with a tool instead of just by hand you will have a mother of a job getting it off afterwards.

Also I have never had a filter leak either.

cheers

I still try the cup/socket tool roughly every other time I change my oil, but I've generally found them to be worthless. I use a set of locking pliers (AKA Vise Grips or Mole Grips) to remove them and put them on by hand. I have noticed that they tighten up over time; I put them on hand tight with a smear of fresh oil on the gasket, but they are tighter than I can remove by hand when it comes time to replace them.

Apparently, the HF204 is 64mm in diameter and the HF191 is 68mm. The 204 is listed as fitting lots of Hondas and Kawasakis as well, where the 191 is only listed for Triumphs. Weird, as the 204 is listed for some Triumphs and not others, but the OEM Triumph filter fits pretty much anything Triumph has made with a spin-on filter.

Cheers,
-Kit

HI,

On the bike right now is a HF204 and its leaking.

I have a HF191 in my room at work, which when I get back I will try the cup socket which is about 68mm diam. Hopefully it will fit.

IRT smearing oil on the new filter I didn't as there was already a grease smeared on the unused filter. Next time I will smear oil as well.

Not sure why its leaking, maybe the thinner oil? I'm using HiFlo filters because they are $14 a piece compared to $30 for a OEM filter and a lot easier for me to get.

I did the filter up hand tight but now its bloody tight and needs a tool to remove it. I also don't won't to damage it as its only new and I don't won't to drop the new oil. If worse comes to worse I'll mutli-grip it loose and re-tighten. Or just do another service.

Engine heat "tightens" the filter over time. I've spun them on by hand until them bottom out then given them another 3/4 of a turn.

I use Bosch or Purolator Plus filters mainly because nearest dealer is 50+miles of traffic I'd rather not deal with. Never again will I use a Fram on anything.

I have 3 different filter sockets for my toys. They are the cheap stamped metal sockets from the local Discount Auto Parts store. They all fit a little loose if you push the ratchet all the way in, but if you just give the socket a tap, then insert the ratchet it'll spin it right off.

Hi Ben,

When I first bought my sprint from an older guy who owned it since new I decided to put fresh oil and filter in. It was the Repco brand I believe, it was so bloody tight that I had no choice but to hammer it out with a screw driver. Like you I got all these oil filter removal tools and nothing worked.

I then decided to use the K&N oil filter which has a socket head and it's super easy to remove.

Never had a leaking problem at all.
