Head race bearings and alternators

Hi, i'm new to this site and just popped in to ask a question
Me and my husband have 06 Sprint ST's and have done 23,400 miles on them.
Whilst in the Alps recently my altinator died (excuse spelling!)...and his head race bearings went......so, both repaired/being repaired under warranty...
now this is the weird thing....
This weekend, my head race bearings have gone, and, so has his Altinator! - so a reverse of ailments.... both bikes, same probs within three weeks...
has anyone else encountered these problems?
to clarify, two identical Sprint ST's, 18 months old, 23,400 miles, head race bearings and altinators both 'gone'...
Incidently, prior to the 06 models we had the 01 models, did 43,500 miles on them and didn't have either of these probs......
Any comments gratefull received.thankyou

You two are obviously well suited to each other! I really doubt one thing has to do with the other. The Head race bearing has been a problem for a long time. The design is a poor one for the top bearing. It is EASILY over tightened and it is done mostly by the factory or the dealer during servicing. Obviously they are STILL adjusting them to tight! The alternator could be a ground problem as there have been a few 955 models with grounding problems. Obviously your bikes are build the same so not real weird that they might have similar problems if it's a weakness in design or implementation. Triumph has a link on their site to check for recalls by VIN #.

My bike is actually listed with a grounding recall that needs to be done......who knew, it runs perfect!

You should have bought a few lotto tickets I think........what are the chances!?

Raine, welcome! I agree with Stlakid's observations. The odds are amazing, talk about built in shelf/design component life. Wow?!

Best of luck, it is fantastic to read about you both being able to ride so much together.

Cheers
Bob

Its funny but I do recall a long test with a 2005/06 sprint st and the journalist said his alternator went at 18k miles....so there might be an issue there?

Welcome

Welcome aboard Raine,
as you can see we are a pretty friendly bunch and some of us actually know a bit about bikes and in particular Triumph Triples & Sprints.

Stlakid is one of our most knowledgable fellows.

Cheers,
DaveM
