Oil Filter Tool

Where can I get an oil filter tool for an '01 Sprint without paying dealer/stealer prices?

Would this work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-E...spagenameZWDVW

Thanks!

You can walk into just about any Autozone or affiliate store and get the same thing for $4.95. Where are you buying your filters?

Good question. I hadn't even considered where to get filters and oil yet. If I can't get the present filter off, there's no point. :-)

All I knew is this isn't quite as straighforward as my other bikes, and I needed a particular socket that will get in there. I'm still trying to find out what that is. The shop manual gives a Triumph part number, but no description that would help me identify a suitable aftermarket tool. In fact, the manual doesn't specify what filter to use, either. That would help in buying stuff *before* I start fiddling...

Anyone able to fill me in?

Thanks!

86 mm is way too big!

I had the 74mm cap tool laying in my garage and it was still too big, I think Triumph is 69 mm. I just got the K&N with the nut on top and used big screwdriver hammered through the side of the filter to take the old one off.

or, you can ger universal oil filter tool at any of automotive stores for less than $10 - it looks like big pliers with sharp teeth on them

Just go to an Autoparts store and buy a Purolator PL14612 (2.5"tall) or a PL14610 (3.25" tall) filter. Then look at the oil filter wrenches and buy the one that fits the Purolator. I think it is 65mm. It shouldn't cost over $5.00.
The best deal for your future filter purchases is ebay or Amazon.

I just use my hand. Just reach under there and spin it. If it's really stuck use a screwdriver, then when you put your next one on go finger tight, as it should be.

Never should put a filter on with a wrench. Usually if you have to use one to remove it was put on with a wrench and over torqued.
If I remember right we had a "stab a filter through the heart with a screwdriver" thread awhile back.

Warning on filter tools

Mate,
just a quick word on filter tools. I bought a filter tool for my T595 Daytona which I tried to use on my Sprint. I found the tool was to big for the Sprint so I bought a new one from my dealer. Sometimes it is better to pay a bit more and get the right tool.
