12,000 mile service question

somewhere just shy of 9000 miles I noticed a slight clacking noise from my engine. Runs fine otherwise and it may just be me hearing every little noise the engine maks and getting paranoid. My question is could this be the result of the valve clearance needing an adjustment. I am just about at 10,000 miles not the 12,000 recommended. Should I get the 12,000 mile service early or is that to early to make any adjustments

If I read this correctly, you have ridden 1k with this noise. Has it recently gotten louder or combined with vibration, loss of power, etc? No new helmet or type of earplugs? Triumph motors are generally bullet proof, but they do talk to you. When in doubt, I would have it serviced. 2k early isn't more than a few weeks riding time and it will give you peace of mind (hopefully).

Best of luck

Smile clacking noise

RickyT, clacking noise from the engine. When do you notice it? At idle, at speed or after shut down?

Its very faint and I have a tendency to hear alot of noises in all my vehicles that turn out to be nothing. (I have been lft stranded one too many times by breakdowns).I can only hear it at idle or at low speeds after which engine noise drowns it out. Its so faint that I actually have to listen for it to se if I can still hear it. It hasn't gotten any louder or anything

Other Motorcycle: I wish
losse valve?

Could just be a rattly valve thats a little loose, if it is it is not a biggy.

These engines are not known for their quiet operation.

Reference 12K service:

I was quoted 6-8 hours labor by my dealer. Is this right for 12K serive? Seems kind of long.

Second: They said I need to keep it overnight so the engine is cold and they can then check the valve clearance. Is this necessary?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

K100,

I don't know about the 6-8 hours labor but the engine does need to be completely cold for the valve check.

I had a similar noise on my 955i Sprint.
Turned out to be the chain (Quite Loose) hitting against the
the chain runner that is mounted on the frame below the chain..

This runner is much harder than the rubber chain rubbing strip that is mounted on the swingarm & will make a clacking noise if the chain is hitting it as you ride over bumps..

Thanks Palo Alto. (I'm originally from San Jose.) I'll have to ask around some more, because 6-8 hours at $85 an hour seems steep. That does not include parts and fluids.

Valve clearance must be done with the engine cold.

Regarding the hours and labor rate, you might want to consider the Triumph dealer in Ft. Myers. There are several BMW and Triumph riders from your part of Fl who drive over for their service.
