'99 ST does it have electronic speedo?

Does the 99 ST have an electronic or mechanical speedometer? A friend of mine wants to install an electronic gear indicator and was wondering if it will fit.

Nikos,

The signal from the front wheel is electronic (magnetic pickup on the front hub), not the old cable type. But the speedometer itself looks quite mechanical. The ST is different from the RS which is all electronic. Does the gear indicator need a signal for speed & RPM so it can figure out the gear?

Thanks. The gear indicator needs pulses for the tacho and the speedo so this should work.

The pulse ratio to wheel speed count is very low on Triumphs - do not expect good performance from shift indicator. It is likely to be very delayed in response, especially in the lower gears

Hi DEcosse,

Have you tried it and it didn't work? Do you feel it won't worth the trouble?

I used an external drive sender on the rear wheel with 6 magnets giving pulse count of 6 per rev. The Sprint has I believe 2.
Mine was already slow & I know Acumen does advise the slow response with low pulse count.
In the higher gears, it was fairly quick but in 1,2,3 especially, very slow.
But it will get there. Most useful for avoiding searching for that "7th gear"

I'm going to experiment by adding a frquency mutiplier - that should improve the situation - I'll report back but it will be a few weeks

Here's a video I shot of the bike on a paddock stand -

Gear Indicator Video

you can see by tach & sound when the gear shift is & how long it takes to update the display. Notice that it updates quicker with each progressive up-shift.
Note that this was pretty low wheel speed, so would be slightly better as you go faster. However the flip side is you will have less pulses than me, so proportionately slower.

Hi thanks for the info and the video. In your video the response to the change in the first three gears is indeed slow but not too slow for what we want the gear indicator to show primarily: Mainly not look for a seventh when cruising, secondarily know that the bike is in second when contemplating whether to downshift before a hairpin or not.

Just recognize yours will be slower still
If it is unacceptably slow, consider adding the drive kit which is what was driving mine. The more magnets you use, the better the response.
You can see pics of how I mounted it in this gallery
