TOR installed yesterday

Hi,

Went to the dealership yesterday to have a TOR installed, ride down mostly Interstate, to get there ASAP.

3 hours later (dam that pipe got hot) I was handed the keys, got my gear on, went out and fired up, all seems ok no real difference, ok a bit louder.

Pullled away in the parking lot and at the point you start to load the engine up heard this growl start to grow

The next 50 miles home was really fun, went through to Golden and followed the foothills upto home. Pulling away from stop lights with the TOR is just FUN, that triple just growls!

Verdict, seems to run and sound nicer, on overrun it no longer pops, but the growl during acceleration just makes you want to keep twisting your wrist and of course the smile from ear to ear is just like the one I had when I did my first solo

Steve.

I really love the sound of the TOR but I also love the sound of the popping during decel too.

Much as I'd love to get an aftermarket exhaust, I'll stick with stock for another couple years.

Enjoy!

I don't have a TOR but I thought the decel pop stayed with the proper tune load.

There are actually two kinds of 'pops' with the current STs, assuming all is well with the motor.

The first is the normal for the Triumph tripple popping, more like loud gurgling, which I find nice and characterful which indeed is masked a bit by a louder exhaust.

The second is loud popping, mainly on closed throttle, which is caused by the Secondary Air Injection letting in fresh air in the header pipe. This one is too loud and I don't like it at all. I also think a more open exhaust like the TOR enhances the sound. Next service I will ask my mechanic to disable the SAI (by covering the air inlets), since I have the TOR installed and I'm illegal emissions wise anyhow. Of course this only applies to SAI equipped bikes (US and EU I believe).

I could'nt wait to loose the annoying popping/back-firing noise (as opposed to sound) on my Sprint, it remined me of an out of tune engine or one sucking air through a blown gasket, fortuneatly the TOR pipe has eliminated most of it maybe due to a richer mix (re-map) or a less restricted flow or both.

I think the only way for complete elimination would be to restrict (block off) or remove the SIA, on various Suzuki's it's called a PAIR valve, pulsed air intake reed which is essentially the same deal designed to meet EU regs, total system weighs approx. one kg. not sure re: Sprint set-up, I'm kind of living with it, just, maybe one day will take a look.

Regards, Lambo

Lambo,

Are you sure your bike has the SAI? I thought AUS spec bikes didn't have that.

Pretty sure it does Nikos, the service manual states that it is to be checked at 40000 k's, the popping/back-firing Harley thing is also testament to this, if it has'nt I'm seriously concerned for the exhuast valves, no really it could not be running that lean and it does'nt run hot either, we do not have the catalytic converter "downunder" however, maybe that's what you may be thinking of.

Regards,Lambo.

My tame mechanic told me the SAI is fitted to all of them in order to meet one US state emission regulations - California he informed me as zero unburnt fuel is allowed to escape from the exhaust.
i think it's that lovely burble on overrun that puts black soot spots on my tail-light

I have sen a thread link somewhere (not here) on removal, I'll see if I can dig it out .

PS NikosR what's the weather like over there- we are off to Roda on Corfu soon for 2 weeks, will be great to get out of this darn rain !

Smegin.
Sorry to hear you want some but don't have any

Thought of emigrating once - but the other half said no.

It spoils our rock climbing too and lots of plants in the garden are too leggy because of the wet.

Thousands of families in the UK are still suffering from the after effects of last months floods and more is forecast - it's really serious. At least we don't get tornados

Apparently it's been the wettest summer for "lots" of years here.
