Question 06 Sprint: no power below 3K RPM???

Hi everybody!
I am kinda new here on this forum. Just got my 06 Sprint about a week ago. Now I have 450 miles on it and it looks like there is a weird problem. If I want to start moving I need to keep RPMs above 3K and gently use the clutch. In other words it acts like sport bike prepared for the track. I have service on this week and will address this question but may be someone has that kind of experience?
Thank you.

Hi MacArrow

That doesn't sound right at all. It's no twin but it should have lots of low end. Certainly take it up with the dealer, mine has stacks of power below 3K. You "could" pull away from just above idle if you didn't care about the engine. It should pull very strongly from 2K and like a horse from 3k.

Welcome aboard

Hi MacArrow,
no it doesn't sound right but do bear in mind these engines require a bit more time than your average Japanese machine before they start to perform at their best, the gearbox is the same.

I'm curious as to what you're comparing the Sprint to. A Harley?

In any case, trying to work your new bike under 3K is the worst thing you can do during run-in to this motor.

Smile Something not right

Macarrow I bought my 06 Sprint with 1470Ks on the clock
and from day one she pulled and pulled hard from idle all the way
through the gears....maybe a good idea to bring it up at the service.

I agree with Sean (gsbeamer), the Sprint is a very torquey machine and should pull well from down low.

Having said that, I never run it below 3000 anyway as I think that's just too low for the Sprint and most bikes - except perhaps "big ol thumpers" like Harleys. They just work better when kept in the optimum rev range.

Unlike a lot of sports bikes, the Sprint pulls well from about 3500 upwards and I certainly spend the vast majority of my time in the 3500 - 6500 rpm range. It doesn't mind a bit of a thrashing now and then though

Cheers,

You definetly have a problem...maybe a vacumn line undone under the tank area? Does it surge?

No bottom

MacArrow, how is the power above 3K? The bike should feel really torquey through a bit above the 7K range where the curve starts to fall off at a sharper rate. All three cylinders firing smoothly? I've powered through curves @ 2700. That was one of the things that I liked about this machine is how forgiving it is if you didn't gear down enough for a turn. The Triples do take a while longer to break in but you shouldn't be feeling a serious lack of power at low RPMs. The reason I ask if your power feels off across the board is either like ricster says, a loose vacuum tube or worst-case something like a bad/leaky head gasket (although you should be able to hear that fairly obviously.) We'll keep the positive mojo going for you that it's something simple. Nothing worse than long down-time during riding season.

Unhappy

Guys,

Thank you for replies. I will definitely rise the question to the service man.

I compare it to Honda VFR800 FI VTEC.
It is kind of hard to explain the problem.
On Honda I have to problem to start moving: just need to release a clutch and I go. On Sprint the same causes engine to stall. If I want to start moving on a Sprint I need to rev engine up to 3.5-4K and maintain it there while I release the clutch. If rpm goes down below 3K it surges and it can even stall. Had a big problem to enter to the freeway yesterday because of it.
I saw the same behavior on the sport bikes prepared for the track and geared in that way: more teeth on the front and less on the rear sprocket.

As for above 3K there is a problem around 4.5K range.
I had a test ride on the demo bikes with 200 and 2000 miles on them and was exited how good and smooth the engine was. Mine was OK in the beginning (I got it with 7 miles). And I feel like it can accelerate but it does not want to.

denman13:
Yes, there is a sound like a something in the exhaust is not sealed. Another concern is that the frame gets hot. But I think it is normal for this bike.

I just wanted to add that I do not like the idea of "run like you stole it" brake in. What I do I ride like normal which means that engine is in the 3.5-6K range.

Anyway I have an appointment for this Thursday. Will post all findings then.
