Is triumph going backwards
Ok after having my new sprint for month and received my hard bags last week I discover that the new hard bags do not hole a full size helmet. The 2001 through 2004 models could. What's up Triumph? Also the Top box can only have one helmet.

I have an 03, and the side bags will hold my helmet, but tighter than I care for. The top box has never held more than one helmet.
There are options for handle bar hangers and under the top-box hangars (my dad's gold wing has those).
Though I do agree. One of the bags should hold a helmet.
IMHO, they could have spent a little time designing the luggage for the new generation bikes too. They look horrible when mounted, especially the trunk. The 01-04's blend in more with the bike's lines.

Two helmets
The top box will hold two helmets , but they have to go a certain way!
Our two Shoei XR1000's fit by having the two chin pieces pointing forwards and inwards. I'll try and get a photo up tonight

99-04 top box could hold 2 helmets. New ones, I don't think so.

I never understand why bike mags use the helmet in the bag as a gauge for the capacity for the bags.
I never place my helmet in the bag. That's what helmet locks and snakes are for. If I have my bags on the bike, I'm carrying/storing clothing or items that need to be secured.
Having said that, I feel the Triumph bags have sufficient storage.

Its important to keep a distinction between the 99 - 04 ST factory luggage and the 05+ ST factory luggage. The two systems are completely different and are not interchangeable between the two series of bikes.
IMHO the new system is a big backward step and to be perfectly honest its rubbish. Its as if Triumph have tried to re invent the wheel, rather than stick with tried, tested and refined systems such as those offered by GIVI.
I had the factory luggage on my 99 ST and found it worked very well over some 50,000kms. The base of the top box developed some stress cracks and Tom Byrnes at St Peters (for those in Sydney, Australia) replaced it under warranty.
I could get a full face helmet in each of the side panniers and with some creativity, two full face helmets would fit in the top box. I feel this is a bench mark for the usefulness and practicality of such a system.
The 05+ ST factory luggage on the other hand will not fit a full face helmet in the side boxes. The top box will take one full face helmet, but not much else. The intrusion of the locking mechanism housings and the internal dimensions make it almost impossible to fit anything in any of the boxes. In a real world, practical sense, the system is next to useless.
I have GIVI boxes and SW Motech metal work on my 05 ST and find the system works very well and is half the cost of the factory system.
Brett.

Hey Brett, thankfully I read your response before purchasing! I'm buying a luggage system (2 panniers and top box) for my '06 ST and I was considering the factory panniers. By the sound of things that's a bad idea. Can you tell me the model number and purchase place/price for your GIVI system? Are they easy enough to fit? A pic would be nice too Thanks mate.

Depends on your needs
I'll admit that the panniers are not the strong point on the 07 I bought earlier this year. While they function OK and look decent enough, I've seen the luggage from the 04- models and theirs were better. BUT, I don't use them very much and honestly when I'm taking a weekend trip up north, I still just bungee a day pack onto the back seat. The bike looks better without the pannier rails on the side which have a cheesy plastic look to them so I leave them off until I really need the boxes on. If I take a two-up trip for a long weekend, I'd use them or if I were going to do a long solo trip. But mostly they just sit in the garage looking sad because they don't get the same love my black horse does. I'd still really like to see Triumph put some stock helmet locks on the bike somewhere like from under the seat.
Oh well, it's a great bike but nobody's perfect.
