Blocking off the Secondary Air Injector

I have the TOR exhaust on a 2006 1050 with the updated tune. I am trying to get rid of the burbling and backfiring on deceleration even though I know alot of 1050 riders really, really like the burbling and backfiring.

I blocked off my Secondary Air Injector (SAI) with a plastic plug in the hose that goes from the SAI to the airbox and really like the lack of burbling and backfiring on deceleration. I believe there are differet tunes that disable the SAI but this method of disabling the SAI was really quick, cheap, simple and it is very easy to reverse if needed.

My question is it okay to block off the SAI at this location or should I fabricate some stainless block off plates to put under the reed valves?

Are there any other changes that need to be made when the SAI is blocked off?

It's a popular mod for Bonneville owners, but never heard of it being done on the 1050, as most like the popping on the overrun, suppose there's always one ....

You might want to use something stronger and more heat resistant than a plastic bag. The bag will soften at temperature and burst at some point.

SAI exists for the sole purpose of providing oxygen to the headpipe precat and muffler cat catalytic surface.

What you have done will disable SAI. Anything more will require a tune. Triumph (nor anyone else) do not offer a tune for precat (headpipe), cat, but no SAI.

The SAI solenoid valve is normally open. Electrical power is required to close the valve. The non SAI tunes do not tell the ECU to continuously drive the solenoid valve, so the only way to disable SAI is mechanical blockage of flow.

What the non-SAI tunes do is disable the ECU check for SAI solenoid coil resistance. You will have to load a non SAI tune in order to remove the SAI valve and avoid a check engine light.

'06/'07 tunes
20104 cat + precat
20105 NZ/Aus/SA bikes stock without precat/cat
20106 Precat but no cat, no SAI but TOR (US with TOR)
20107 NZ/Aus/SA no cat, no precat, TOR (NZ, Aus, SA with TOR)

Note from the above that the stock NZ, AUS, SA can without catalyst is different and flows differently than the TOR.

CLB, wondered where you were. I figured this one would pique your interest.
I was going to block the SAI on my bike and had gone as far as getting a gasket to use as a template to fab the plates. Then, getting a Trident and TOR tune changed my mind. The backfire is still there but has been transformed to a pleasant burbble. So, now I'm part way socially conscious.
