Stebel Install on an 05+ Sprint - Mounting Questions
Having recently been the victim of several near-hits from inattentive, lane-changing cagers, I'm ready to order the Nautilus. However, I can't say that I'm the most proficient when it comes to metal fabrication - specifically with regards to creation and placement the bracket for the horn.
Is this something I can order with the horn? There seems to be a number of questionably priced brackets available from TwistedThrottle.com, but I'm not sure which one can be used on the Sprint.
If it's a piece of metal that I need to pick up from the local Home Depot and drill some holes in, then bend in my bench vice, I may be able to handle it. What size and composition have others used?
Lastly, placement - is it possible to mount it in the same general area as the stock beeper?
Thanks.

I'm not good at giving detailed instructions, but I do have a picture in my album of the Stebel Nautilus mounted on the left side of my bike.
I fabricated a mount out of 3/4 al angle to pick up two of the sprocket cover bolts. If you do this, you will need to make a radiused cut out on one leg of the angle to match and fit the sprocket front countour.
Since I am now a 'beat to fit and paint to match' mechanic I rarely record measurements. I usually make a template out of file folder paper before cutting metal.
One warning about the Stebel, the relay that comes with it is highly unreliable. Replace it with a 30A from an auto parts store or Radio Shack.
An overlooked aspect of the Stebel is that it consists of a small compressor and a horn which can be separated to allow the compressor to be mounted anywhere, and the horn then positioned so that it is not muffled by being under a fairing. The two parts can then be connected with a length of hose.

Just installed mine last weekend...
on my '01 RS. I pretty much installed it exactly as documented here
Same location, slightly different bracket, but in the exact same location. Fits perfectly. Relay is mounted on the old horn location. I can highly recommend ridesafer.com as a good place to buy it as they include an inline fuse, wiring, connectors and a decent, but somewhat cryptic wiring diagram to help with installation. Took me about 2 hours to install.
As long as you can fabricate that little bracket easily, then the rest is no problem. I'm sure you could easily find something at Home Depot which will work just fine.
Here's my quick product review. This horn may is very, very loud. Get it.
By the way, I also installed an LED brake/running light license plate frame. Highly recommended as well and easy to install. Helps me to be seen on my jet black RS with black jacket, pants and helmet.

It's worth the work. Very good upgrade. Much louder even at highway speeds! Do it.

i took a 4 hole bracket from lowes, and cut it in half and used the 2 pieces to mount to one of the radiator mounts. i got the install kit from twisted throttle, but you have change the ends to hook up to the horn wires. also in their instruction you don't ground the negative side of the horn to the chassis. if you do this it won't work, it must be grounded to the negative side of the horn (took me 2 weeks to figure that out and some help from the sprint st list).

OK - I'm sure I can answer this question myself, but thought it couldn't hurt to pose it anyways:
Is the reason that the stock horn location can't be used because the fender will bump the compressor of the Nautilus when the forks compress?
Makes sense to me, but I just wanted to clarify that it's the reason others chose not to use that location.
I've played around with the idea of disassembling the compressor and trumpets, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. If I were able to do that, I think the trumpets could be mounted in the stock horn location and the compressor could be mounted under the fairing (providing the opportunity for maximum forward-facing volume.
Thoughts? I'm not too jazzed about taking the fairing off because the temps are steadily rising today and it is humid out there.....I guess I dreamt this would be as simple as the Tail Tidy install last nite
Anyone w/ pics of an install on an 05+ Sprint would be appreciated as well. I think I'm going to peruse the albums to see if I can find anything.
Thanks.

oldndumb -
I did find the pic in your album that gives me an idea of where to mount it. I'll have to venture out of the house later today to find the appropriate piece bracketry and a replacement relay.
One question on the hose adapter included in the packaging - what the hell is it for? it looks like it is for adding additional horns to single compressor. i don't get it.

Don't know what your 2005+ fairing mount looks like but I did this with a short piece of flat aluminum on my 2003.

not as easy as i assumed
it never is, though.
after about 4 hours of cutting, crimping, bending, and routing, i got the nautilus installed. i placed it on the left-hand side of the bike, just behind the radiator and below my frame slider. there were 2 empty threaded holes on the upper rear end of the left side of the head, so i used one of them for the bracket - 6 inches of 'hand fabricated' (i.e., bent in a bench vise) steel. the horn doesn't touch the header pipes or anything else for that matter - but i'm still concerned about the long-term affects of heat on the unit.
i had hoped to place it in the upper reaches of the fairing, but there really wasn't any room w/ the coolant reservoir and 'storage' box taking up those spaces. i'd also considered mounting near the front sprocket cover as oldndumb did, but couldn't find any place to secure the bracket (i do NOT have any metal fab skills).
first impressions are that, while it is loud, it wasn't as loud as i expected. regardless, it should do the job when i need to make a point.
while i had the fairing off, i was also able to fit the radguard i ordered months ago. installation took a little muscle power, but once everything was in place, it secured with one simple bolt.
next up.............motolights or pazzo levers?

Not Loud...
Make sure the horn is mounted so that the compressor cylinder is vertical.
The horn, at least on my bike, is just as loud (perhaps louder) as any car horn I've ever heard. In fact, many car-owners upgrade their OEM horns with the Nautilus. If you honk in the garage, it should be loud enough to be painful and even damaging if you do it long enough.
