Is there any good reason I cannot power a Zumo GPS off of the Powerlet socket on the left side fairing (no not under the headlights). I understand it is not a switched circuit but simply pulling the cable should resolve that quickly.
powerletproducts.com makes a Powerlet plug->Zumo specific power cable (p/n: PPC-020). I was hoping to use this instead of wiring up the bike.
Works fine for me. You should plan for how tro protect the powerlet plug when it's not in the socket, though. If you leave it plugged in, then your cradle will be always-powered, and your insurance against a short lies only in that little rubber boot.
This question and versions of it have come up in the past. I can not understand why you would want to do this. Just tap the Garmin supplied power cord to a switched circuit. That way, when you power down the bike, the Zumo will default to the power off mode after asking if want to continue on the internal battery.

I understand the switched circuit is ideal, and I would like to do that. Can you recommend a circuit near the triple tree? Or am I going to have to go to the tail light?
I do not have the service manual yet, and because the bike has less than 100 miles on it, I have not even removed the plastic to see what lies underneath. I am just coming up with an install plan for now.
That link advises you to connect to the factory GPS plug. That plug is constant on. It is a hold over to when the Triumph GPS did not have an internal battery. Much more convenient and logical to connect to a switched circuit.
I wired mine to the tail light circuit along with a Autocom system. That way the power is switched and if you want to run the mp3,XM radio and blue tooth you can. The amp for sound is in the base units.
I left out the part about by using the taillight circuit you can power the system with the key in the accessory positionposition. But the Powerlet Powerbar is something I think I will look into.
Looking at the schematic, the heated grip plug has three terminals. The blue/red is switched. The brown is constant on.
Never blindly trust anyne on wire colors or functions. Always check and verify with a meter/test light.
No reason you can't use the plug. With the plug adapter and the zumo cord it does tend to stick out quite a bit, but for the short term - go for it. When you get time I would go with what O&D suggests and get it hardwired.
But to answer your question the outlet will work just fine.
