Uk seller R/R ?

Hi Guys,

I have tried searching but can't find any reference to a UK seller / distributor of a suitable RR.
I have found quite a few in the states but the shipping costs are reasonably high.

Trawling ebay has turned up a few MOSFET Yamaha / Kawasaki reg recs that look ok, if anyone has purchased one I would be interested to know feedback:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOSFET-Vo...X1000-04-07-/321847327101?hash=item4aef98797d

There is no specification, I have emailed them but won't hold my breath for a reply.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

At that price, there's about a 95% chance you're getting a cheap Chinese knockoff of the Japanese part and a 5% chance the seller found some that fell off a truck. Pass.

The two major US sellers, Moto Electrix and Roadster Cycle, both charge actual shipping costs to the UK. That may be your best bet; though it's still not cheap, it's cheaper than having your bike get towed home or catch fire due to a counterfeit R/R.

A quick Google search turned up other people in the UK with the same problem, but no solutions.

Cheers,

Thanks Kit,
I have brought RRs for previous bikes (namely honda) all cheaper units that worked perfectly but they were jap parts.

I found the same thing during my googling session, the irony of a british bike that only has parts available in the states !.

It is dark outside now so my testing is limited but after charging the battery for a few hours the bike started fine. It is definitely not getting any charge back to the battery as I can only see the actual battery voltage drop with the voltmeter from 12.09 slowly down, i didn't let it run long enough to drain the battery in case i need to move the bike. This was only at idle, I couldn't rev the bike and annoy the neighbours.

the sprint is my commuter so hope I can find a quick solution.

thanks for your help.

Just a thought, but have you gone through the diagnostics and determined that it's definitely the R/R? There's a sticky at the top of the forum.

You can absolutely get that part in Britain; it's £200 from any Triumph dealer or about £6 less from a Yamaha shop.

The '99-'01 955s used an automotive type integrated alternator. The '02 and up 955s and 1050s used the same R/R.

The stators only interchange between '02-'04 models, though they're the same for Sprints and Speed Triples. Oh, and '01-'06 Tigers. Rick's makes a good aftermarket one. Electrosport makes junk and it sounds like Electrex may be the same. Avoid any stator that says it fits both a Sprint and a VFR.

Thanks so much for the reply.

The bike it stored outside and it was just too dark and wet to try any diagnostics last night. I will do all of the test tonight to see if it has fried the stator as well as the rr. Bills are mounting up !.

thanks again

Well diagnostics done,

Multimeter set to diode
The three yellow pins to the reds measure 690, 710 and 718. Is that OK as a deviation?

I went onto measuring the stator itself, again Multimeter set to diode. Measuring the pins against each other they all check out as they should as a short. I then checked against the engine ground and all of them shorted to 0:-(. Time to take the stator cover off, hopefully the pic shows up ok but one section was very black and looked burnt out.

So I need a new stator but it looks like the rr tested ok. Are those readings acceptable and could a stator fail but the rr be OK?.

EDIT

Pic attached this time :

Sometimes the stator takes the R/R with it when it fails, but often the stator alone goes out. It's been a long time since I tested a R/R, but that's about a 3% deviation so I'm guessing it's probably okay. If the stator reads shorted, it's shot.

Thanks Kit,

I will order the stator tomorrow, i think the rr looks ok so i will leave that alone for now. I will look at moving it however and I am sure there are threads on here showing locations. I can only assume a donkey designed its current location.

My Haynes manual tells me to replace the gasket and the oil seal. Gasket I agree with, would you bother to replace the rubber oil seal on the stator cover?.

My Haynes says to replace the breather seal if required, and my factory manual notes that the cover must be installed and removed with care as damage to that seal can cause excessive oil consumption, smoke, and potential engine damage.

I don't seen any obvious problems with your seal in the picture. If I were in your place, I would examine it for damage and replace if damage is found.

I purchased 2 Mosfet`s from an eBay seller in the USA, the 2nd being a spare & iirc they cost me around £60 each delivered to the UK 2 years ago.
I replaced the stator with 1 of an unknown history I bough on eBay, the original stator I had re-wound by west country windings http://www.westcountrywindings.co.uk/ as I`d used their services before.
However the Triumph stators, even when repaired tend to be fickle, so not many repairers with give you a guarantee, this is probably down to the owners frying the repaired stator after not replacing the RR, then blaming the repairer for shoddy work. But having replaced both the stator and RR, and upgrading the wiring. I`ve had no problems since, and the original repaired spare stator & RR are sitting on the shelf in the garage. Only coming out when I stick them in the side case with the tools when I`m off on my extended travels in Europe.
I did buy the bracket for the RR to relocate it to the left side, but as yet I haven`t moved it

Thanks guys,

I contacted the ebay company linked in my first post to see if they could at least provide a spec sheet. They did reply but advised they couldn't give me a spec and asked me if my car was in the list of compatible devices... I decided not to go with them !.

I managed to pick up a new RR with warranty from M&P. It is elextrex which I know isn't voted as the best around here but it seems to be the only manufacturer other than triumph where that sells in the UK. Out of interest I did a diode test on the new RR with reading of 480 across all three phases. It claims to be a series RR so I know the numbers don't compare to the original of 690,710 & 720 but at least all three phases were the same.

I also put a bracket on the right hand side and installed the new rr along with removing the old gasket and stator ready for the new one which should arrive in the next day or so.

Hopefully I will be back on the bike to catch a few days of sun.

This type of R/R is not a "Series" R/R but rather of their R/R series (of) regulators being SCR or Mosfet Types.

hope you can understand that..

There are a couple of Series R/R:

1) SH775 which is getting very good reviews and a
2) SH875aa (I Installed on a high RPM Daytona 600 which is proving to be excellent.)
3) Compufire
4) CE 605 SB Series R/R Kit - (Roadstercycles own)

Hi,

Thanks that is great and does make sense.

I replaced the rr and stator after getting home from a track day yesterday. Instantly charging at a steady 14v on start so happy again.
I also picked up a replacement rotary oil seal. I noticed the new part had the concave of the seal pointing upwards where as the part installed was pointing down. I assume that just happens when you pull the cover off. It looked a pain to press in and I needed the bike back together so I didn't replace it. If it starts smoking or dumping oil into the airbag at least I have a spare ready to go in.

Thanks for your help
