My Sprint ST is at 11,500 miles, so the 12K service is coming up. My problem, I'm needing the bike for a 2200 mile trip. My BMW K11RS fuel pump has gone out and I'm having to use the Sprint to go the BMW Nat'l Rally.

I took the bike to a local H-D/Triumph dealer on Saturday and told them I needed the 12K service done, they said they'd have it done by today, I thought I'd gotten a lucky break. But I've called and they've told me they don't work much on Sprints and don't have the required parts for all the 12K service (such as the valve lash adjustment).

They did, however change the oil that I told them didn't need changing, I'd already done it.

My question. What is the danger of exceeding the recommended mileage for the valve adjust? No problem or maybe a damaged engine?

Appreciate any feedback. I'm suppoed to leave on Wed.

Almost all the feedback for the '02-04 Sprints is that the valves stay in spec. You should be fine with an extra 2000 miles before having them looked at. Enjoy the ride and relax.

But I really wonder about a Triumph dealer that does not have the parts for a 12K check. All he typically needs are gaskets and a stock of shims.

And the shims, should one need them are pretty generic with other makes. CRS someone jump in.

They couldn't change the fork oil or other general things like plugs? Pretty lame.
You could go another 2K

I had the 12K service done at 10K and the 24 K service done at 29K miles. No harm done by going 19K miles between major services although it did require adjustments of 6 valves, 1 intake and 1 exhaust on each cylinder. Doesn't seem to run any differently now so I assume the adjustments were minor.

+1 on the valve adj.

Mine were all in spec at 20,000 K service. It isn't like a timing belt or the like.

They won't break but "sometimes" do require adjustment.

Thanks for the piece of mind y'all. I ordinarily wouldn't have used the dealer in question for the 12K service. But I was up against a wall and thought they understood what was needed. They didn't charge for the work they did do, and redeemed themselves somewhat.

Even if the dealer does not have the tool to change out the shims they should be able to at least check to see if your valve clearances are within specification - it only takes the proper feeler gauge.

If you were really concerned or worried you could have them check the clearances to see if any of the valves are tight. They should hopefully be able to do that.

As the valves wear into the head the clearance usually decreases and if let go far enough it could cause a valve to hang open ever so slightly and get burnt.

I agree with other that you will probably be fine if you put off the adjustment for a few miles.

My 03 has recently had it's 70,000km service - still no valve adjustment required. You'll be right.
