I thought the answer would be in the Haynes that arrived today, but it isn't. So here goes- what grade of gas does the Sprint need?

Minimum 89 octane.

My '01 RS runs just fine with 89.

I run the 91 in mine. Since I'm getting around 42MGP I don't mind the extra $.08 per. :-D

When I picked mine up the Triumph shop said they never used anything other than 89. Using high octane gas was also said to have caused my fouled plugs, found by a different Triumph dealer.

Mine runs great on 89, is turning in 47.8 mpg on the indicator, and 89 is the cheapest grade of gas here in Iowa, so I'm going to keep using it.

89 cheaper than 87? Is that something to do with ethanol? Just curious

Yeah, they're pushing ethanol really hard here in Iowa.

Yes it is the ethanol that give the extra octane, at least here in Iowa. I've been running the 89 ethanol in my Tiger for most of the last 70,000 miles. Also seems fine in my RS, unless I get crazy with the timing with the tuneboy, that can step up the octane requirements dramatically.

the recommended gasoline is 95 ron that translates into 91/92 octane.

I misunderstood higher octane is better...
it is not necessarily better...
it can actually get you less hp... I was running 94 octane.

I had this explained to me first hand 2 weeks ago by my cousin that is a petroleum engineer. I just happen to have my manual in the same room.... and didn't even have to put my beer down. :-D

he got into talking about how lesser octane gas explodes at a faster rate then higher octane. and then he got into how higher compression engines require the higher octane... I must have drank 2 more beers by the time he was done. LOL

if you like I can get the details. :-D
