Just picked up a 99 Sprint ST with 37K. Got it for my son who is going into AF soon == we need to do a couple of road trips. I love this bike but I'm on the moto guzzi centaruo! Do any of you guys work on your ST's? Do you have the "tool"? How about valves and idle? I brought the ST into the shop for plugs, fuel filter, air filter, idle adjust, FI check and fork oil/seals and was given a $700 estimate.

Welcome tomsp to the asylum known as the Sprint forum.
$700 sounds awfully steep for a routine service. Did they say they needed to replace seals or just checking them?
Can I assume that your son is leaving the bike in your "care" :-D while he is in BT (or whichever program he's starting first?)
"Hey Dad, how come my Sprint has 48K on it? I've only been gone 4 months!" :lgh:

$700 sounds like at least double what it should be. I just got a full 12K service on a 2000 RS for about $350. This included checking the valves.
By any chance did you go to a Harley mechanic? :-D

depends on where you are in the country. I received 750 estimates for the 12k service in NYC and about 500 for the service in Denver. 700 is not unheard of for the full 12k deal. I still think either estimate is too much and chose to do it myself.

Hi tomsp,
I was just in your area last week visiting relations.
$700 seems a bit steep to me. I'd check around. What dealer was it?

1. duh. I'm "keeping" the bike in my safe hands!
2. the estimate included: fork oil and seals, valve adjustment, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, idle adjustment (the ST been stalling at low idle).
When I first talked with the shop and explained what I wanted, they told me about $550 for all. When I rode it up there (yes, with son) they quoted a little over $700! I'm calling them this a.m. More later.
At least with my guzzi's, I can and do most of the work!

Hi tomsp, welcome from another new guy. I checked at our local shop on the cost of the 12k service on my 04 St and it was around $450 including parts. The estimate you got sounds steep as others have suggested.

The price quoted is in line or slightly on the high side for the cost of a major service which is due at 20k and 40k intervals.
You can do a lot of the work yourself and just get the shop to do the things where you need special tools.

Welcome and Thank You to your son and family for his future service.
I love the pre 05 body styling.
There may be an independent shop around that can offer quality work at a better price. If they all are charging "too much" for the fork service, I would consider sending them off for a real service/rebuild for about the same money, but with a nice upgrade.
With your Guzzi expertise, I'm sure you could do most of the oil, filters etc. and as others have said, just have a shop do valves or ?? that you didn't want to take on at this time.
Hope you can save some bucks or a least get best bang for the dollars spent. Very cool you both can enjoy some riding together.
Bob
