My bike starts to emit a high pitched whine at 3000 RPM, goes away at around 6000 RPM, in gear or standing in neutral. Is this normal, or is it cam chain problems?

Does the whine come from your alternator on left side of motor? My alternator seems to be making the same noise. I believe I've read the alt. shaft bearing starts whining. I just wonder how long it will be before it stops whining and something a little more serious happens. Like a siezure!!

Mines been whining for about 9,000 miles now. My ex left in 1999, so that's the only whining I've had to put up with.

I think its time to find a good used alternator just in case. I'm not sure anyones around that can rebuild them anymore.

I'm still looking for a good used whiner, I mean woman.

I just bought a pair of Interphone Bluetooth communicators - my wife said "I thought you didn't want me yacking in your ear?"
I said "I did Honey, mine will be set to transmit only!" :-D

(She knows I'm kidding - love her dearly!)

Ok guys, I know its a big temptation but we have ladies and kids here too. So lets keep it down to a dull roar.

Pre 2002 engine and 2002-2004 engines though they may look the same are in fact very different. If you have a pre '02 and are hearing a whine on the left side I would have if possible the alternator checked. Much different setup on the '02s - '04s. The straight cut gears will sound like this normally.

I didn't realize it (I wear good ear plugs) but a buddy rode my bike once while I was standing there and it sounded like the whine of a blower motor. All cam stuff and normal.

Could also be just air box noise.

Don

I vote for the straight cut gears.
