has anyone had to replace the engine on an 955 ST yet. if so what sort of mileage do they do????
I'm looking at buying an ST shortly but due to budget restraints I'll be looking at an early one. Most in my price range seem to have around 45,000 miles on then. Others claim to have had the engine replaced at about 40,000
Advice welcome
Thanks

a guy from california had a Sprint ST w/ over 120k on this site. Said it worked fine. Think he finally wrecked it though. Mine has almost 20k in two years, and still just like the day I bought it.
40k for '99-2000 isn't really that bad. Average riding.
Sometimes it's the luck of the draw too.

I have seen early 955's with under 10k on them for less than $5000.

I spent the last couple months shopping around for 00-03 ST's. You can get an 00-01 with less than 15K miles for around $3800-$4400, depending on options.
Of course, if you're really on a budget, you can pick up a similar year RS for $300-$500 less. That's what I did. Rode both of them, and just though the RS suited my riding "style" better. Saved some money in the process...

I had a 99 955 sprint with 75,000 k on it and it was still strong as,i think if a bike has had all the services done on it ie oil and filters every 5,000k you shouldnt have any problems i have heard of 955 motors going aat 130,000k with no problems give it a compression test and it should give you a pretty good idea of the actual condition of the motor

My brother-in-law just bought a 2000ST with 45,000 miles on it. It still runs strong and looks almost new. It all depends on how well the previous owner(s) took care of it. A 5-7 year old Sprint that has been well maintained with 40,000-50,000 miles on the clock could be a good value. I wouldn't think a motor rebuild would be in the near future.

My '01 has just over 30K miles on it. I don't baby it but I do take care of it. Last time the valves were checked (@ 28K) the cams still looked like new. If a high wear item like a cam looks like new after 28 thousand miles then I doubt any other item will be any worse. YMMV

Well, let's put the question this way:
Has anybody here worn out an engine? Heard of it happening? What were the circumstances, and what was the failure? I'd consider an engine worn out when the cost of fixing it is, say, more than about 1/2 the cost of a new, comparable engine.
