I did about 25 miles into San Francisco today on '06 Sprint, and stopped briefly at curbside. Shut the bike off for about 2 minutes. When I went to restart it, the battery would not turn the starter over, though everything seemed fine on the dash. It tried to start, just not enough oomph from the battery. Turned it off, waited about 60 seconds, and it fired right up. There is no indication of low power while riding. Blinkers, brights, horn etc. all work fine.
Battery is new. Replaced orig with high end battery a month or so ago. Made several more stops and bike started fine each time.
I checked the charging system when I replaced the battery, and it was putting out about 14ish Volts, even at idle.
Any ideas?

My Sprint RS only starts when the bars are pointed straight or to the right. Go figure...
So was it turning, but just not starting? Or not turning at all?

I'm new to Sprints; but on any other bike I'd say that's not right. Sounds like a loose connection.

Definety a loose connection. I had a loose battery connection on my bike and it did the same thing.

Yup, I had a loose connection too and it went as far as blowing a fuse when I pushed the starter button.
I was going to ask if there had been some activity with your battery recently, but you answered that already.
Don't tighten the connection with just a phillips screwdriver...use a socket wrench to get them on tight.

Yimm,
The pre-05 bikes are susceptible to the negative battery terminal loosening up - don't know why. I'm curious why you put a new battery in. Mine have typically lasted about four years in our wonderful California weather. If your previous battery cashed it in prematurely, there may be something else going on.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I always tighten the connections with a wrench, but I will check tonight and report back. It's too bloody hot in the garage to do it yet. It was 105 F. here today.
I hate the heat. That's why I'm moving to Seattle.
My thinking is I check the battery posts, the solenoid connections, and the starter connections. Did I miss anything?

OK. I braved the sweaty garage. It's still 95 here at 7:30 PM.
Anyway, battery connections tight as a drum, solenoid connections tight as a drum. I can't get to the posts on the starter right now, but I will in the next few days.
Battery voltage was at 12.8, so it is charging fine, reg/rec output 13.4 at idle, with a slight decrease, down to 13.1 at 5000 RPM.
Hmmmmm......................... :???:
