Will any OBDII engine code reader not brand specific (sold at many auto part stores) read my 2004 RS's set codes? I have a Triumph shop manual to decipher the codes. I do not want to purchase a Tuneboy or reprogram the ECU. Thanks.

if you unhook the battery you will get the light for three cycles of start/complete-warm-up/shutdown.

The light has been on for more than 3 heat/cool cycles. I was wondering if I could check it myself.

It's been a while ago, but I do remember someone on this forum stating in fact that an automotive reader will list the fault codes. I don't remember which brand he used but I do know it wasn't real expensive, maybe in the range of $39.00. It was after all a standard automotive FI system prior to Triumph's use in it's bikes.

Stlakid that's what I was thinking, I think I will give it a try.
Thanks.

The answer to your question is, yes. OBDII is an international protocol that was legislated so that any shop can have the ability to troubleshoot all EMS's.

There is a generic set of codes that all manufacturers are required to use. There is also a set of unique proprietary codes that each one uses.

So, any OBDII reader will display any stored codes. The generic codes can be googled for translation. The proprietary codes require access to a factory manual for each model and year range.

Thanks for all the reponses. I did not try a generic code reader but from the responses I'm sure it would have worked. I had the bike in the T-shop in August and they read the code for me. Turns out, I had a bad Temperature Coolant Sensor it was replaced for about $100 (parts and labor) and I have not had the engine light come on sense.
