The engine on my 06 sprint has been stalling a few seconds after cold start recently. It starts up again fine after. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the choke or just the cold weather recently here in Sydney.
Has anyone else had this problem with theirs? Mine has done almost 7,000 kms.
Cheers

Does this happen after you start to move, grab the clutch and chop the throttle?
Mine would do that if I started down my driveway directly after a cold start.
IMO, the firmware ramps the idle down a bit faster than the oil warms up. Try giving the bike a minute to warm up before you drive off. Let it idle while you pull your gloves on and such.

Hi CLB
This happens as I am putting my helmet on, literally 4 seconds after starting. The bike is still on the stand. I always wait till I see at least 2 bars on the temp before putting it in gear or touching the throttle.
The engine starts ok (well after the few seconds that appears normal on this year bike) where the revs rise to about 1.5k rpm then after 2 seconds drop to below 1k rpm till it stalls. Hitting the start button again lets the engine start and idle normally after that.
This has been happening almost every morning now for about 3 weeks.

Mine does the exact same thing although, strangly enough, it hasn't done it for a month or so . . . maybe thats just because it's warmer in the morning now when I'm starting it.
Anyway, what I notice is the bike starts up, then within 5 seconds, the idle goes way down and it sounds like it's goilng to die (but never does, exept for once or twice), then within another five seconds, the idle goes back up and then it's fine.
Kind of annoying but hasn't been much of a problem for me yet.

Does this only happen on cooler mornings?
What oil are you guys that have stalling issues running?

AFAIK this is only happening on colder mornings but it's only been happening since it started getting colder - if you know what I mean.
The oil is the stuff that they put in after the first service. Not sure what it is.

Well come to think of it, at 6K, I switched to 15W-50 and that is probably when I started noticing the issue. It never really got too bad though and since the last oil change, I haven't noticed it again. I stayed with 15W-50 but it's Mobil1 which is different than the stuff the dealership used at the 6K service . . . who knows . . . I haven't worried about it too much because it's never really been much of an issue.

Interesting thread. It really does sound like the oil may be part of the problem. Cold start= minimal oil pressure for a few seconds until the passages fill and then the pressure jumps up. If the engine control senses an over-rich condition brought about by the cold start and high revs it will instantly lean out the mixture and chop the throttle to slow it down. Bring on the sudden additional drag of the belated oil pressure increase and the engine stalls due to the high drag/over-lean/light throttle condition. When you attempt to re-start the ECU senses the existing lean condition and adjusts accordingly taking into account the additional drag of the cold oil by increasing the throttle opening and voila! the engine runs fine. My recommendation would be to try a different oil, possibly a 10w-50 or even a 5w-40 like Shell Rotella T Full Synthetic.

Thanks for that explanation Green01SprintST, I hadn't really thought of the oil before. On the second start the engine revs do not lower at all, so it certainly sounds like an ECU related issue.
I rang the local dealer and of course they would need to keep it at least over night to test from cold. If they don't find anything wrong with the components then I could end up paying the bill so I'm keen to look at something as simple as the oil first.
I don't want to start another "which oil is best" thread, so I'll give the shell a go
