Only 250 miles or so on my 07 ST so far. I don't find the transmission clunky or hard to shift as was stated in some of the "pre-purchase" research I did.

To me it feels solid and positive. I really like it! (even though I come from Japanese bikes).

Is it possible that your 07 ST was "Made in Japan" ?
Check the sticker :hihi:

Wait 'till the break-in oil breaks down, then if your dealer re-fills with another batch of semi-synthetic, then it's possible you'll feel the John Deere gearbox we all talk about.
Specify fully-synthetic at the 600 mile service.

My new 06 sure is clunky and I'm up to about 1500 miles now.

My '06 was a tad stiff thru the first 600 miles or so but rapidly loosened up after that. Now at 12000 miles it's as smooth shifting as can be.

Sprint gearboxes like the engines take a bit of breaking in.

It is normal for a Sprint's g'box to require a very positive boot especially when new, they can be quite tight while breaking in.

They all get better with more miles, it is certainly not a "Gixxer slick" box but it isn't bad either.

I call it character!

I guess that's what the Ducatisti call their noisy rattling dry clutches!

+1 with DaveM

mine eased up and was much smoother after about 10,000 kilometres.

I seem to remember when the 05's came out there were a few quibbles about people missing the 4th to 5th shift (I think that was the one). Happened to me a few times too. Now that I see this thread I can't remember the last time I saw anyone mention that in a thread and can't remember the last time I missed that shift, either. So they must have all loosened up or we just all got used to the Sprint tranny. I have no complaints.

Throttle free play and clutch adjustment have alot to do with a smooth shifting gearbox.

I've only got about 1000 miles on mine and already I notice the box loosening up a bit. A thousand miles isn't much but half of them have been fairly hard miles. The 'clunk' sounds awkward and feels a little stiff up front but it hasn't really hampered it's overall performance IMO.

This makes a lot of sense. Very good point.
