Long story short my battery is mostly drained and I can't start the bike.

I can turn it on (just) but it is definitely not going to fire up.

Any suggestions on what my best option is here? A friend of mine sugggestsed that I get myself a "battery charger" and stick that on it for 12 hours. I am a little concerned about whether that's going to mess with the bike though (manual says no jump starting).

Suggestions? Comments?

thanks,
shane

These bikes are notorious for being finiky with a drained battery. The ECU is not happy without a good charge.

remove the battery and give it a deep charge with a battery tender, or accumen charger.

Your bike will thank you.

A battery charger isn't the same thing as jump starting it. As far as I know, there is no harm whatsoever in putting a charger on the battery.

Or you could always pop start it, I suppose. :-D

Thank you.

This is the 06 model with, I am told, the crappy to replace seat.

I assume I am going to have to take the seat off to get at the battery right?

Is there any special trick to getting the seat back on?

You can charge the battery through the Powerlet plug on the left side inside the fairing of the bike, without disassembling anything.

You will need a battery tender and a powerlet adaptor.

As a rule, I like to charge batteries off the bike, or at least with the seat up (like on my '78 Honda). It's a bit of a pain, and maybe not so needed with sealed batteries. With 'maintainable' batteries (the kind you had to add distilled water to), they could 'boil' a bit and theoretically make an acid mess. When I put our bikes up for winter, I remove the batteries and charge them in the house (sitting in plastic bins).

Again, I'm not saying that's the case with yours, but you might as well learn where and how to remove and install your battery. You'll have to replace it someday, no matter what.

BTW (part two here), WHY is your battery depleted? It is worth giving some thought to why it is in this state, and will you have trouble on down the road (literally and figuratively)?

Good point. If your battery is bad, then it's just a replacement issue but if you're bike is borrowing battery juice for firing or anything...are you getting any fault codes from the ECU?

It died out from cranking it so much. Happened to me.

Anyway, if have to ride the bike, you can jump it with a car.

Rule 1: DO NOT TURN THE CAR ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just hook up the cables(WITH THE CAR AND BIKE OFF!!!!!!)

Then simply slave from car battery buy turning on, and cranking bike right up. Then unhook. Emergency only though.

Will not hurt the bike, BUT DO NOT TURN THE CAR ON!!!!! FOR GOD'S SAKE LEAVE THE CAR OFF :-D
