i am trying to install the stebel compact horn on my bike, and got it all hooked and when i try to press the horn all i get is a click in the relay (and once releasing the button i hear another click) and no horn sound. for those that had to replace the relay is this what happened to you, or is this a low voltage issue? i am tending to think the relay is ok since i am hearing the click, but not sure.

Fly,

Sounds like the coil of the relay is wired properly, since your are hearing the clicking. Check the other 2 wires going to the relay (the bigger power wires): one should read +12VDC straight from the battery (through a fuse of course). The other larger wire should be going straight to the positive (+) terminal of the horn. The other thing to check is to make sure the negative (-) terminal of the horn is well grounded to the chassis.

My guess is perhaps the fuse is blown. If all the wiring checks out, you may want to hook the horn up straight from the battery (you might have a bad horn): ground the (-) horn terminal and touch hot wire from the battery to the (+) terminal. I did this step first, just to make sure the horn was good before taking the time to install it. You might want to put in earplugs if you do this, though -- that joker is loud!

:wow:

Good luck,
B.B. Bill

One other thing to check: if the wiring looks good and the horn is good (straight to the battery), you might have a bad relay. To check this, on the relay, leave the coil wires hooked up from the horn switch/old horn. Remove the bigger power wires from the relay poles. Then hook an ohm meter or continuity checker up to the 2 pole terminals of the relay. The poles should be open (infinite ohms/no continuity) when the horn button is not pressed. The poles should close (about 0 ohms/continuity) when you press the horn button.

I've installed two Stebels and both times the Italian relay failed at initial power up. I now advise anyone doing a Steble install to replace the original relay with an autoparts or Radio Shack relay.

If the horn was just swapped out for the stick, does it draw more than the relay can put out. I know nothing about the Stebil, but most aftermarket horns require a more robust relay and a hot wire run back to the battery, and using the original wiring to fire off the new relay.

my ground is attached to the radiator for the horn, and also where my horn is mounted. i grounded it that mount as suggested by stebel. when i took the positive side (hot) and touched it directly to the positive side of the battery got nothing from the horn. what is a good way to tell if the ground is bad or the horn just doesn't work. should i take the negative side of the horn and hook up to the negative on the battery, then test again? i am this close to giving up and calling it a day...

Can you test your power circuit? Try jumping from one side of the relay to the other to close the horn power circuit. Even without using the horn button, you should have your hearing damaged. :-D

And if you tapped into an ignition-controlled line, make sure the key is on.

Fly,

Yes, if you connect the (-) horn terminal directly to the (-) battery terminal, and then touch a wire connected to the (+) horn terminal directly to the (+) battery terminal, you should go deaf.

Don't forget that, if there is a fuse in-line with the wiring, your problem could simple be a blown fuse. If not, you either have a bad horn or a dead battery.

Good luck,
