Who carries an extra clutch cable with them? I am wondering if the 2005/06/07 bikes have long life cables or is a good idea to carry a spare..opinions? :???:

G'day ricster,

I always carry a spare cable, just in case!

I route it next to the working cable and have it attached with a couple of cable ties, makes it easy to change!

Cheers, G :-D

Buy one and keep it in the luggage. I have broken two out on the road. Learned my lesson the hard way.

Does anyone know if the Yamaha cables listed in the WIKI parts cross reference fit the 05-07 Sprint?

Triumphite, did the two failures you mention happen on your Sprint or another bike, and which end(s) of the cables failed?

Ric,

I know others have had clutch cables break but the last time it happened to me was in 1977. I check it periodically but don't carry one.

Had one break on my 02 ST on the way to work. Got there (and home, it was an evening shift) by roll starting and loitering at idle approaching red lights.

When I bought the new one at Peter Stevens in Melbourne they recommended I check the alignment of the cable, as they only fail if they are rubbing on the edge. It was, and I bent the bottom bracket to make it a straight pull. I noticed a week later it was pulling at an angle again, so put a washer either side of the bracket to hold it straight, and it is 30,000km later.

90,000km on my 99 ST with the original cable.

I'd check the alignment of the cable, and its condition if it has been rubbing, before I bought a spare.

I had the cable break on my 2000 ZX9R at only 14months old. So yes even on modern bikes they break.

As OldnDumb said, Does anyone know if the Yamaha cables listed on the Wiki fit the 05/06/07 models?

G'day Russ,

The Yam cables listed fit the '05-'06 bikes, not sure about the '07 with it's higher bars.

Next time i'm at the bike shop i'll grab one and check the length for the '07.

Cheers, G :-D

I went to Gengras after work...its right across the street from where I work. I ordered a clutch cable just in case. I just have heard horror stories about being stranded if it happens. For $40.00 I figure why chance it. My cable looks fine, but was wondering the other day on a long ride, the "what if" senerio.
