Hi All,

I recently bought a '00 ST w/ 14,000 mi. on it. I love the bike, I've had an eye on the Sprints since '99. Finally took the plunge and have no regrets. I just have a little heat issue I need to work out.

At temps above 75 Deg. F. I have a lot of heat on the insides of the calves and feet and the back of the thighs at all speeds. The temp gauge is in range and the electric fan is working. Is this normal for this year range? I did a search of the forum and most of the posts regarding heat were for later models.

Has anyone with experience with the earlier models run into this? I am thinking about getting the headers ceramic coated or modifying the the engine cowl to flow more air.
In all fairness this is my first bike with full body work so I guess I can't compare it to my previous bikes. Maybe I just need to man up and live with it. Any suggestions on cooling it down would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum Elmo.

Full fairing bikes direct more of the heat on to the lower legs especially noticeable at lower speeds.

As you say, most of the complaints about heat are from the 05 onwards model but they had heat shields fitted after so many complaints from the owners.

I am not sure that you couldn't do something similar but be careful not to cook the ECU under the seat!!

Think of the benefits during winter though :-D

They are a great bike. Enjoy

Hi Elmo - Congrats on your new bike.

I have an '01, but usually wear full leathers with Sidi race boots or Draggin jeans and Bohn Armor so I don't feel the heat on my calves while riding too much, but I do notice it a bit. I think steven is on target as this is a by product of a full faired bike. I don't think the heat is abnormal compared to other sportbikes I have owned. Lets wait and see if anyone else chimes in with this being a problem.

I've got a '00 as well. You will get some heat...it has to go somewhere. Serious heat is when it becomes uncomfortable as long as you have proper riding gear on you should not notice any unusual heat if you do then maybe have your dealer take a look.
Probably just newby paranoia I had a touch of it myself when I first got my bike....whats that sound...seems too hot.....etc etc.. everyone experiences it to some degree..Just ride it!! :-D

The first and 2nd generation Sprint STs can feel a little toasty at times. Some decided they could do without the bellypan during summer. It can come off independant of the rest of the fairing, and really doesn't look to bad.

Ceramic coating the headers might cut it some. But I think most of the heat is going to come off the radiator, not much can be done to bring that down.

Same same. I live in Perth Western Australia and summer temperatures do get over 40 Degrees C regularly (well over 100F). The bike is fine but I do find it a bit warm, especially in traffic. I think if you can get some of the heat away from the pipes it might help but there is probably not a lot you can do. I bored my baffle out and maybe that helped but stopping all that exhaust heat bouncing around the opening to my can.

Just don't wear short pants. Bad Idea normally, really bad idea on a Sprint in Summer.

I test rode an 05 Sprint and that was really hot. Hotter than my current bike.
