What's the difference between this and shooting him in his back?

None. However if there's no doubt about someones guilt or involvement in a violent crime, then why should the cops put themselves in any more danger than they have to, to catch someone? If that means a sniper so the hostages aren't hurt, or a car blocking an escape path, then that seems fair to me.

Hope he enjoys jail.

Yep he had it coming fair and square...

IMO Thieves and criminals get off too lightly in the western world. In some middle eastern countries if you get caught stealing you loose your hand...I reckon that would cut the crime rate down dramatically if they did that over here... (oops looks like I might have opened a can of worms... getting my flame suit on...)

I bet you don't get flammed. Contrary to the Court's opinion, there is a low tolerance for theives among most people. They might get by with a spank on the wrist/probation, but thats not what the public would do to the miscreants if they had their way.

we need some of that in Canada for heavy crimes. the poilce could have just shot him. saved the bike and the damage to the car. a waste of money.
a bullet's much cheaper. just clean up the streets make it safe for kids.

there's a convicted serial rapist admitted to raping 26 women. charged for 6.

he's living 10 blocks from my place. and rightly hounded by the public and media.
