Welcome Aboard deano,

Some here have reported similar experiences with their boxes/throttle.

The box should smooth out with a few miles on it ... as for the throttle it may need adjusting.

I had my '07 in for a minor service at 7000km with a highly recommended Tech here, and the difference in throttle action/control was huge.

(personally my own 'box has been as good as any bike i've owned)

Enjoy the Sprint!

Cheers, G

:-D

deano,
welcome aboard and congratulations on your new machine.

Sprint gearboxes improve with more miles.

I now have 40,000kms on mine and it is very smooth. It will never be as slick as my Gixxer but I have no complaints.

You shouldn't be getting backlash though. They are noisy and tight when new though.

Hi deano- that was the question I was going to ask!
I had the same difficulty & for the same reason. When I ride in traffic, which is where this problem occurs most, I've always got two fingers resting on the brake lever. I found that by rotating my hand to open the throttle, whilst keeping the two fingers very lightly pressing downwards on the brake lever, that I had much more sensitive control at small throttle openeings. I hope that made sense; it was more difficult to explain than I thought it would be! That was back in Feb when the bike was new- I don't even think about it any more.

My gearbox was awful when the bike was new. It was mega clunky. The knowledgeable folks on this forum advised me that these bikes need lots of running in. Now, at 5,000km (3,000mi), the gearbox is now just about OK (i.e. hugely improved) and still getting better.

Welcome to the forum. Lots & lots of clever people here (I'm not one of them but I experienced both of these problems ), so I hope this helps.

DaveB.

Verify that the chain, throtttle cable, and clutch lever adjustments are in limits, then ride.
Everybody generally agrees that the gearbox will eventually break in and become smoother. I surmise that the improvement is part break in and part rider technique improvement.
Don't know if you have had your first oil change, but that usually improves gear changes.
Having said that, you should not be experiencing backlash.

The first thing I did with mine new was to adjust the throttle as I had the light switch problem too. Smoothed right out.

If you adjust your throttle, make sure you check it afterwards running turning the bars lock to lock to make sure the throttle isn't binding. Better yet, have your dealer do it since it's new.
