I just bought a 2002 Triumph on E Bay from PA, had it shipped to CA. I went to the DMV to register it today and spent most of the afternoon there. Now, I am told I may not be able to register my bike in CA because it is a 49 state model. WHAT ?! How can it be that I cannot register a bike with an out of state title here in good 'ol CA? Does anyone know what I can or need to do to take care of this? I was planning on leaving on a riding vacation on Monday Can anybody help?

For now, register it from out of state...say Nevada or the like..perhaps even PA (much cheaper here). This will at least bye you some time to take your trip and jump through CA B.S.

BTW, I'm originally from Fresno CA, and had my wife's car transferred from PA to CA a few years back. It took some time but we finally got it all smogged and registered.

Hope this helps.

Postal,

Does the bike have 7500 miles on it? If so, you can register it. If not, it's much more difficult.

Yes the bike has 9600 miles on it. All the numbers matched and all they were looking for was the epa sticker. When the talk turned to "out of state title", a comment came up that I may not be able to register it in CA. someone mentioned something about CHP. Then I went to the local Triumph dealer who just checked the bike over for me and they also mentioned something about CHP. but at the DMV, they said it was their decision not the CHP

The only thing I've ever heard about the CHP is in regards to your M1 endorsement on your drivers license i.e the riders safety courses you can take in lieu of the DMV riding test. I would suggest asking a few people at your DMV. I've had issues registering old bikes from out of state and have asked three or four people at DMV and got three or four different answers. Good luck with all that, I know it's a pain in the... :brk:

Goin postal-I purchased a Toyota 4runner from New York and to get it registered in CA, I had to have someone in law enforcement(local police in my case) verify the vin numbers and fill out a form to give to the DMV.

So, as PaloAlto said, if it has over 7500 miles on it you should be able to get it registered. If you really get into a jam, htere are people who make a living doing title work for car dealers-I foud a lady here locally who would go to the DMV andregister my vehicle for $25.00. Money well spent in my mind because she could get things taken care of that would have me goin postal-sorry. Believe me, I had a lot of experience. I have owned over 36 bikes, mnay purchased from out of state. Good luck-The People's Republic can be a harsh place.

Postal,

If you have the bill of sale/title transfer and it states 9600 miles and an odometer that says 9600 miles then you should be able to just take it to the DMV and register it. That's what I did.

Good luck,
Bern
