opps meant for this to go into the hoops thread
Posted this in the regular forum, but thought it would be good here also as a follow-up
Just had new hides put on Friday. Got the CORSA III front and rear. 190rear 120 front. Scrubbed them in on Saturday at the local high school for a while then took them out for a little warm-up. Put 283 miles on Saturday on predominantly back roads with mild curves just working the residue off. Back out on Sunday to may favorite road and stepped it up a bit. With the feedback the rear was sending I was confident enough to ride down to a little less than 1/4" chicken strip on the rear and 1/4"+ on the front. This is right up there for the fastest I have gotten good confidence building feedback from any new set of tires I have put on in the past. This is the first new skins for my ST, but in the past I have used both Pilot Powers and BT014 from new on the gixxer. So any comparison I use between the new Pirellis and the PP and 014s have to be taken against the fact they were on the gix. I will write a more complete review of these when I get some mileage on them. My commuting has gone the car pool route since gas topped $3/gal this past weekend so the Corsas will see mostly back road rather spirited riding over the next several weeks.
Initial impressions with moderate pace.
Front feedback is very sensitive - gives you a very good sense of how the patch is planted on the road. Very similar to the Pilot powers initially which gave great feedback, but much better than the Bridgestones. The biggest surprise was the feedback from the rear. Granted I was not pushing very hard at all so take with a grain or two, but I come from a long long motocross and dirt track background so I don't mind, and even try a lot of the time, a loose feeling rear (Don't tell my wife - she may get offended :-D ) Being cautious with the new skins, but trying to find that break-away point proved fruitless. I was not able to to get even the most mild of loose feeling in the rear. It felt very planted and incredibly stable getting back on the throttle moderately after the apex. Again not pushing, but I was impressed with the stability and initial grip. To give you a speed indicator - the hardest I was riding was 48mph around a posted (safe speed) 20mph slightly off camber right hander. Good tires with a high set rear you can scoot this turn between 64 and 68 to give a comparison. This was the only time I drug the peg feeler, which I put back on with the new skins to ensure I don't get to far over to soon).
Turn in is immediate with little effort and once on line they stayed right there, but were not opposed to adjusting their line.
Sum up - Initially I am very impressed with the Corsa III for feedback, initial warm-up time and stability. As I get a few more hundred on them I will report back as to how I like them pushing them a little harder. I am hoping to take the ST to a track day at VIR later this summer and really get a chance to see how they work on a longer trip for center wear and on the hot asphalt of the track to see how the sides hold up at track temps. Oh almost forgot price just so you know. Matched rear replace on the bike - yeah I was lazy - out the door $310. I thought not bad at all.
