i've been trying on shoei and other "high end" ($350+) helmets and really couldn't get any idea if i liked them. instead of buying one of those, i bought a cheap one from dennis kirk, $46, figuring if i don't like it it is no big deal. well i like it, much quieter on my triumph and no eye watering. it amplifies the engine noise on my bmw, so i won't wear it riding my bmw, don't need it. it is an m2r mr-25, dot and snell approved, good venting. j

Smart move on the full-face. When you upgrade to a premium helmet you'll REALLY notice the difference.

A cheap full faced is one thing... a more expensive Shoei or other brand will add comfort and extra safety... after all don't be cheap on the only stuff keeping yer pumpkin together.

so specifically what are the advantages of the more expensive helmets? i'm familiar with the strength of various layups but they don't even tell you what those are. they have the same ratings as far as dot and snell. i imagine they are quieter but this is a step forward in a big way.
i wish when i bought a mt. bike i'd gotten the cheapest i could find, then move on instead of just jumping in. j

Other Motorcycle: Very stationary Commando
Extra Motorcycle: A couple of 'em
Advantages of a more expensive helmet-

Snell rating, not just DOT

Usually quieter

Usually far more comfortable

Lasts far longer

Better ventillation

Better aerodynamics

Lighter weight

Probably some other things I can't remember right now. Main thing is to get what fits and look at the price afterwards. You may find that a $250 helmet fits you better than a $500 helmet. I suspect that a $46 helmet won't last very long, has no ventillation, isn't comfortable after a few miles, and has no Snell rating.

I've been wearing an HJC LT-20 for a while, which is DOT and Snell approved, and is comfortable. However, I just tried on an Arai Quantum /f the other day, and it was REALLY comfy. I may have to buy one and see how it compares. I think the Quantum /f is being replaced, though.
