Hi All, I just picked up a totally stock one owner 00 ST (1,600 miles). Runs fine above 4k but constant stall under 2k on take off in first. Any thoughts on this? Bike had a full service in 03' . Also finding neutral is a little bit of a chore. I have to down shift from second to find it. Besides these two issues so far I'm very impressed with the ST's handling/response. Thanks, Jim

cafejim - I own an 00 Sprint as well, bought it new. I believe your nuetral finding will improve as you put more miles on. But, make sure your clutch adjustment is correct. Check how much slack is in your clutch hand lever. You should have a 2mm gap, or slack, at the lever before the cable is pulled by the lever. I've always had a bit more gap in mine.

I noticed your other question about 'how to' do repairs and maintenance on your Sprint. Do a search. With all the pages this forum has in storage, you should run upon a discussion or proceedure for what you need. Also, I recommend purchasing a factory Service Manual for your Sprint. It has lots of info.

As to your stalling issue. I would like to know more about what is happening. How do you get it above 4K if it stalls in 1st before that? Do you mean it stumbles and does not shut completely off? If it is a stumble or poor performance below 4K, it could be several things. Does it start and idle well? With only 1600 miles, it obviously sat for a long, long time. Bad gas could cause some issues. I would make sure you have good fresh premium gas, fully charged battery, and try to put some good riding miles on it. It might get better by being used. :razz: The early models, like ours, had a noticeable improvement in engine performance once the engine revved above 2500 rpm.

Keep posting any solutions or if the problem persists.

Its riding time, and its time to put some mileage on your Sprint!!

Hello Jim,
..not sure if this applies, but maybe... I bought my '01 new as a leftover in late '03. Didn't really get to ride it until early '04, so it had been sitting for a long time. At first, it would sputter and stall quite often when coming to a stop. Pull the clutch and it would die. It would start back up and I'd need to keep the revs up. Then I took it for a 1800 mile weekend trip, running it pretty hard through the beautiful upstate NY backroads. No more stalling or sputtering...whatever was gunked up worked itself out and it ran great...still does. Also when I had the tank fitting recall done, they put in the latest ECU tune and the low end pull seemed to improve.

Charlie...

G'day Cafejim I also have a 00 Sprint, mine had 17000kms (just over 10000mi) when I bought it in January and also has the weird neutral finding thing. I usually flick up to second and down to get neutral: I believe this is fairly common.

Mine was pretty good in traffic but a little snatchy and did not like the low rev takeoffs that are often a part of riding when bumper to bumper. Roadduster and Charlie are right, if you blast the cobwebs out with some good fuel and new plugs things should get better.

A couple of other tweaks you could do will see a marked improvement - most of the howtos are in the inexpensive mods topic and are well worth considering if you are able. I have done the following and the bike feels awesome now - I opened it up in second on the way home from work tonight and it absolutely screamed as the front wheel started to get decidedly light.

Sorry, I digress. The following:
New NGK Iridium plugs - cleaner bottom end power;
Fuel reg mod;
bored out the baffle in exhaust - lack fiscal approval to buy race can, so far;
new air filter - Pipercross;
18 tooth front sprocket - faster acceleration and makes driving in traffic a whole lot easier.
I also serviced pretty well all the fluids as soon as I got my bike to make sure it was done right. (full service in 03 is a long time ago, I would seriously think about checking your brakes for corrosion and have a good look at the cooling system - before you blast the cobwebs out).

Hopefully things will smooth out naturally. As many will attest on this site, the 955 is an awesome motor which has a confidence inspiring strength to it. Tidy up the fuel, breathing and ignition and you will add significantly to the joy of riding your Sprint. This forum is a great source of info - the search engine is bit dodgy but there is heaps of info that should get you sorted.

Enjoy.

Oh yeah, if it has been sat for a long time it may have condensation in the tank and some of the rubber bits may have dried out - especially in the fuel system. If you can find out how often it was ridden it will give you a better idea of what needs checking.

run some seafoam through the tank and get it up to speed reving till 8K or so between gear changes. a tank or 2 and it should blow itself out.

I think you have some good advice here already - I agreee get some more miles on her with a few tanks of gas and some higher revs and I think the problem will cure itself. No bike likes to sit for long periods and this is sometimes how they let us know. :-D

I once bought a low milage Suzi GSX750F that had sat in a shed for 5 years and had the same problem with idling. Ran like a dream at revs but seemed to lose cylinders at idle, and if it lost two it stalled.

After dicking around with most things mentioned above this didn't go away for 5,000km. A compression check revealed almost zero compression on the two right cylinders. Man in shop opined corrosion either on the cylinder, rings or valves. Didn't like the bike enuf to pull the head off and find out so traded it on... MY FIRST SPRINT!

Have you checked the compression?

Thank you all for your good advice. I added chevron FI cleaner into a tank of 93 Oct. and it is starting to blow out the cobwebs. Alot smoother even in the low rpm range below 4K. Finding Neutral seems to get easier as the bike heats up.

Thanks again for your help/advice
