Well folks, as we're off to Spain this summer, I decided to do something about two problems I have with the bike...

1. Seat lock blocked by the N/S pannier

2. No where to store our helmets when the top box is full.

So for the first I followed the instructions on www.triumphnet.com url=www.triumphnet.com/st/mods/lock/index.html]Seat Lock Mod[/url].

For the second I decided to get creative and after much pencil chewing, I could only think of one place where I could make something work... the panel fixing screw near the battery.

I used duralumin to make the hook, which I will cover with gaffer tape to protect the body. It fits nicely inside the lip of the seat, and doesn't allow anyone to un-hook it.

Here's an image to tempt. There are 2 other images in the album; the lock relocated in the mudguard and the hook close up.

I'm happy to do a drawing, but I need someone with access to steel, cutters and benders to make some!!

The duralumin should last to Spain and back,. but it would be nice to make some others.... such a simple thing!

Hope you like! :-D

Rexx

P.S. Sorry '05- boys, but by the time you've got your seat off and on, your helmets would have dissolved!

Rexx,

how is this for a cheap solution: I bought a single bolt tie down eye at a local bike shop. BMW types use these on the frame.

I use it as an auxiliary strap hook, as well as hanging my helmets from it, one on each side. I use a locking carabiner and a helmet d-ring extender to lock them securely.

I say there rexxy old pup, that's quite a nifty shed you have for your Sprint. Is that your design? Very compact, and it appears to be reasonably weather tight.

Love that shed, if the local council will not allow me to build the 20' x 10' I want, I reckon I might do something like Rexxy's bike shed.

I also like the idea of the single bolt tiedown eyes, I could use these on my '07 Sprint top box.

Cheers

Ah yes, the shed... that's the mk2 version with steel uprights and roof beams, and bolt hinges. I foolishly left the mk1 version with the roof unsecured one weekend when I went away, and came back to find that the wind had got under it, flinging it over the top and onto the fence post..... that roof weighs 45kg!!! - hence the gas struts.

I have used the fence to support the back panel as I couldn't find a way to stabilise the back without great steel bars getting in the way of where I ride the bike in! It does the job, and once I clear the carp out, I can go back to storing the panniers on the shelf!

Like the eyebolt idea, but I've always been a little wary of the small padlocks; had some bad experiences with them.

On the hunt for sheet steel now, although the duralumin should do the job. The light fingered ones can't get any bending moment on it as the hook lip touches the underside of the seat frame.. I might just quit on the steel version and use this!

I'll get a dimensioned drawing up when I can

I did a quick sketch of the hook

It was pretty easy to make... I started with a 100mm long strip of 21mm wide by 1.5mm thick Duralumin (it bends better).

Cut the two 7mm chamfers off the hole end, and rounded the corners with a file.

Drill the hole

Bend the angle to follow the slope down the panel where the bolt tab plateau ends.

Tape a 4mm diameter drill at the hook bend point and gently bend the strip around through 180deg

Cut off the excess on the hook end, and round all the edges and corners off with a file.

Viola (as the French say) one hook.

I'm going to cover from the first kink, over the hole. around the top and down the back face right round the hook to its tip with gaffer tape to stop scratching. This will leave the bit where the d-ring goes in bare, as it's quite a snug fit.

Now all I have to do is change my 18T front cog back to 19, fit the panniers and some tyre slime, and I'm ready.

I do enjoy the difference the 18T makes to the performance, but when you are two up with full panniers, topbox and tankbag, the front end lifts so quick it is no fun stretched round the tankbag.

It's only done 1000 miles and is the genuine Triumph one, so if anyone wishes to make me an offer before I put it on eBay ......
