The Storms vary in stickiness depending on your lean angle. This is new to the Storm series of tires.

Lee IMO (and that's all it is) is that as long as they haven't been in an accident, they should be OK.

Saving normal symtoms (like squaring off) you should be able to tell of any obvious damage like gashes etc..

I looked at some a while back but, after postage and fitting, it was not worth the effort to put on 2nd hand, possibly good tyres when I could get new fitted for $100 more..

That's my $ 0.02 AUD worth

No they do not really vary in stickyness, they provide a larger footprint when you lean over as the tyre wall changes shape to allow this and hence provide a greater contact patch the rubber is not stickier.

This technology is also used by other manufacturers.

Having said that I think the Avon Azaro and Storm are both excellent sports touring tyres and I got the most mileage from an Azaro that I have been able to achieve in many years.

Like dual and triple compound tyres these are not really new technology and Michelin is not the only manufacturer that does this, but Michelin market the race proven technology better than other brands do.

A note, the Avon Azaro's are not available anymore and have been replaced by the Storms although there may be bike shops still sitting on Azaros at a good deal. I have a Azaro on the front and a Storm on the rear. I went to get a rear Azaro which I couldnt get anymore so I got the Storm and will replace the front with the Storm next season.
In subsequent posts the topic of Avon Storm's variable patch size is discussed. That property is the exact reason why on Storms it extremely important NOT to mix tires front and rear. If you look at the front you will notice that it is more elliptical in cross section than a lot of other tires. Avon did that because of the need to have the front and back in sync when the back changes its patch shape. I ran one set of early Storms and they did handle very well. The front tire had "the" wobble problem and the back was toast at 3.3K miles. Avon has admitted QC problems with early tires. I hope they have fixed them. Although I loved my Azaros I won't be buying any more Storms.

Well I better make it a priority to get rid of that front then. Yikes! I researched it on the web and didn't come across to much accept the QC issues. The reviews I read aid at about 6000kms on the Storms they weren't seeing any of the flattening yet so I was impressed but I guess I better get that Azaro off the front. I would say though if you ask all of the readers we would all have had good and bad experiences and each would have a specific flavor of tires.

A tyre question

Thought this would be the best place to pose a tyre question. My 05 Sprint has just over 8600 miles on it, and the front tyre is the original 020, which I must say I have hated since I got the bike. Gives me no confidence in the wet, follows all the ruts in the road, and has really cupped. I had a new rear 020 fitted about 4000 miles ago which still has some life left in it.

Having read through the post's, the Michelin Pilot Road's seem like the tyre that will suit my needs. Commute 26 miles a day in all weathers and out at the weekend for fun!!

At last my question, I need to replace the front 020 as the wear bars are now showing. I want to replace it with a Michelin. Would it be a problem to have a Michelin on the front and Bridgestone 020 on the rear or should I replace both at the same time??

That is my question as well Karl ....i am heading up to the city this afternoon to get a new front tyre and also will b going with the Pilot road as i use bike for commuting and need something to hang on to the road in the weekends have an almost new 020 on the back so same question
Q: ok to run with the Pilot on the front with the 020 on the back
Q: would the pilot Road be ok for my needs or would the Pilot Sportb better

I am sure we will get the advice we seek. This forum has a great depth of knowledge. The only problem is the time zones for a quick ansewer. Mine is going to the dealers for a front pad change in 12 hours time, and I know they will comment on the front tyre.
Keep watching, and lets hope the wise ones can give us their advice.

Hi Guys,

The short answer to your question is.. NO.

You should not have an 'un-matched' set of tyres.

I know some riders will go for a 'stickier' compound on the front but from the same tyre Co. but even this is recommended against, as the tyre Co. design their tyres as matched pairs. (compound, tread pattern etc.)

I would not use tyres from Different Tyre Co. on the same bike, unless I am stuck and have no other option!

Cheers, G
