16,000 miles and no noticable wear on the chain, unbelievable! My Aprilia Futura's only lasted 12K and my Multistrada only 10K. I don't pamper the bike either, I RIDE it - EVERY DAY (12,000 over the past 9 months).
I wonder if it is the "backlash" gizmo they feature in the tranny has something to do with this.

PS: I use Silkolene lube, usually once/week.

I've got about 22.5k miles on mine now, and was thinking about changing, but it doesn't look bad and it measures up just fine. It fits the rear sprocket fine and the teeth on the sprocket looks good too (the front is a newer 18t so I am using the rear as a guide). I think I'll just keep riding.

With the adjustment maxed out my 01 RS got 30K miles,
manually lubed. Replaced with stock new chain and sprockets at the start of 06 season. Ray W

There's been a range of threads before on chain life. Certainly lubing is important.
Perhaps as or more important is to make sure the chain slack is never set too tight by a shop. A too-tight chain will dramaticly wear both chain and sprockets as the suspension is compressed during your rides. So always do a self-check on the chain when getting the bike back after a shop does anything that might lead to it being changed.

That could be dangerous, think how many more times that 18 tooth goes around to one revolution of the rear.It will probably show wear long before.

V-twins are harder on chains than triples-or-more, lumpier power delivery on v-twins...

I got 30K out of my original chain on the Sprint RS. When I took my bike in for the 30K service, there wasn't really much adjustment slack left in it, so the service tech said he was going to put on a new one, along with sprockets. That was cool with me, cause I figured it was time. But, if I was cheap or poor, it could have gone for more miles.
I try to clean, lube, and adjust my chain every 500 miles. Proper maintenance is the key to keeping any part of your bike working effectively.
