Hello,

I'm going to look at a 4000 mile 2001 Sprint RS tomorrow morning. I know the 01 and 02+ engines are different. Are there any significant weaknesses with the 01 motors? i.e. performance, reliability, ease of maintenance etc.. I'm in no particular hurry and would hold out for an 02+ if there's a compelling reason to do so. Any inputs hugely appreciated.

Thanks!
MR

MR,

I guess I would say the '02+ is slightly more sophisticated. The chassis and suspension are functionally identical for the two versions. The '02 engine is redesigned and is quieter (less mechanical noise) and produces about 10% more HP. The transmission is also a bit smoother.

Both versions are really pretty reliable and neither has any significant weaknesses.

If the RS looks good to you, don't have any reservations about the version issue.

Good luck,
Bern

2001- 104 hp
2002- 118 hp

The 2002 has 1mm larger inlet valves and 1mm smaller exhuast valves. It also has a stronger clutch as the pre 02 models quite often had a clutch rattle.
Check the rear wheel bearings. If you hear a top end rattle it is likely the E.F.I. needs remapping.
It will probably feel top heavy if its the first time you ve ridden a Triumph Triple, but you soon get used to that and it doesn t seem to matter once moving anyway.
The throttle feels a bit like a on/off switch at first due to the E.F.I.
Check the head stem bearings, they can get notchy.
I ve done 7000 klm in 5 months on my 02 model ST with no problems, not even used (or leaked) a drop of oil.

:-D :-D

I concur - I have had both. If the price and condition is right, buy it. You can improve the motor significantly with a Triumph off road carbon can and an off road ECU tune. The cans for these are becoming nice and cheap as dealers are looking to offload there remaining stocks.

I like my black bike with the black engine. This bike cost me £2999 with Airflow screen, Rentech rack, touring scottoiler and belly pan.
