I have recently purchased an 02 Sprint ST it has just had its 24000 service. It has a definite knock in the lower gears especially when slipping the clutch pulling away from junctions and roundabouts. My local dealer tels me all Triumph gearboxes are like it, which I find difficult to believe. I would welcome comments from other ST owners.

Hi Wurzel,
What do you mean by a "knock"? My bike doesn't "knock" from the gear box or anyplace else. A knock in the lower end sounds like there may be a crank shaft problem, or you are using too low of an octane gas. IF the knock is from the transmisssion there is a broken or worn gear someplace, or there is a bent shaft someplace. Tell the dealer to suck wind, these bikes don't knock, and when they do something is wrong.
IF you are talking about them being cluncky on shifting, some are and some aren't but that is not a "knock".

Up-date:
Returned bike to dealer for additional checks, they now say the chain and sprockets are worn and need replacing. After 25000 miles I,m not surprised. :???:

Hi Wurzel,
Well did you get them changed and did that take care of the problem? There may be some other people that are experiencing the same thign and that info might help them also. If it doesn't fix it then that is good to know also, so that they can carry that info to the dealers.
Hope it worked out

Chain and sprockets replaced, gear change smooth as silk!!!!
Still an occasional knock in first and second. I cannot feel any slipping, vibration or hesitation through the transmission, I suspect it may be slack in the chain clipping the lower chain guide during gear change. Further investigation required :

Recently my bike occasionally has a slight knock pulling away in first. Not always, sometimes... can't find the exact conditions in which I can reproduce it. Drives me nuts, dealer checked during my 40.000Km maintenance and couldn't find a thing...
The bike runs fine.
Like Wurzel I'm puzzled also...

No more knock.
The problem was in the engine sprocket. The original chain and sprockets were so badly worn that the chain was resting on the hub of the engine sprocket and therefore allowing play between the teeth and the chain. So why still knocking with the new chain and sprocket, the answer!!!!!!!! Original triumph engine sprockets are fitted with a hard rubber covering over the sprocket hub which acts as sound dampening, when the new chain was fitted the same problem arose where the chain was resting on the rubber hub. Now after a couple of hundred miles the chain and sprocket have bedded in and therefore the teeth on the sprocket take up the drive rather than friction between the hub and chain.

Sorry I missed this one but glad you have found the problem.
If I might make a suggestion, keep your new chain adjusted on the loose side of Triumph specs. Less strain on the whole gear train and seals especially if you ride two up.
Keeping them like this I made one adjustment at 500 miles where a 18 front sprocket was installed and another adjustment at 650 miles. Nothing for the past 8000 + miles.
Keeping them on the tight side just increases wear and tear and you'll have to adjust more often.

Good that you've found the problem.
I'm still left with my occasional knock when taking off.
Most of the time when i rolled the bike backwards (on a slope) a bit.
I'm puzzled, I'm reaching end of Feb my warranty period and would like to know what is going on...
Is there some play in the front sprocket????
