I had a friend mention the other day that the Triumph Triple and 4 are basically a redesigned Japanese engine. I wondered what the real/full story is?

anyone?

I noted in one "history of" site there is no mention of engine design source, just that it was continuing to be developed...

also... who owns Triumph?... is there a majority stockholder or is the company closely held?

.... and why is it that Triumph makes no accomodation for direct contact through their website... seems just too odd that they blatently do not want people sending them email or contacting them... yeah yeah... send communication through the dealers, but stories retold loose detail and focus....

Hi Jason,
1) NO the Triple has been a Triumph design since before their near demise. The four cyclinder was used ohhhhh somany years age by many different compaies. The current Triples are Triumph's own.

2) John Bloor is the owner of Triumph Motorcycles , and the last I heard the company was NOT being traded on any stock market. (I may be wrong on this)

3) As to why Triumph doesn't have cotact info or links on their web site, I have no clue! It would go a long way to enhancing their customer confidence and satisfaction levels.

BTW the friend that tols you this doesn't happen to ride a Japanese motorcycle does he?

John Bloor owns the whole thing. It's his company.

I heard on t595.net that Lotus designed the triple engine.

Triumph just sent me a huge survey in the mail. Gave them a piece of my mind.

It's my understanding that when Triumph sat down to research and redesign what is now the triple they did extensive study of all the top Japanese bikes. While I'm sure they would not come out and state it but the Triumph product needed to become more bullet proof to compete with the Japanese bikes. It stands to reason any company looking to be successful in the same space as the top bike manufacturers would dissect at least a few of the competitions bikes.

I ran into a mechanic that had a nice back room tour at one of the facilities and notice a bunch of Japanese bikes sitting around in different states of tear down.

In the book Triumph, the Legend, the author, Mac McDiarmid, claims that the Triumph triple is based on a Kawasaki engine. That doesn't mean that Triumph's engine is a copy of the Kawasaki, only that Triumph, from the beginning, planned to use some of the design features of the Kawasaki engine.

Of course, just because someone wrote something down doesn't necessarily mean that it's true.

Hi Bskibeat,
I just want to see the 05 Sprint! Probably won't get rid of Blue Angel but still want to see Trumpet kick some motojournalists in the teeth!

BTW fi Triumph used a Kawi engine design as a basis for the triple, I have no problem with that. Kawi engines have always been super tight and fast. 1976 KZ 400 I had was a screamer.
