With the Oh-Fishal Triumph oil filter running me almost $15 at my local dealer I got to thinking: Do other manufacturers make an oil filter for the Sprint? How much do they run? Do any of you use said other mfr. filter? Thanks!

STP ST6607 and Fram ??6607 for $3.00 and change. I’ve used both. Honda filter part # 51358 haven’t tried this one yet.

The 'best' oil filter for your bike is made by Purolator for the Mazda! The Pur-One part # PL-14610 is also only about $5.50 at your local Pep Boys. (yes, Manny, Moe, and Jack) If you value that fine triple you will avoid any filter with the Fram name on it! They are great at marketing, they're everywhere, but they are also 'JUNK'.

Follow this link for some interesting information on oil and air filters...........

Oil & Air filter report

Draw your own conclusions after reading a bit about filters. The stock Triumph filter (toko-Riki) is a good filter, it's just not the best or worth any where what the dealer gets for it.

And yes I use the Purolator. In fact I just stocked up on a few, seems that part # is getting 'real' popular and is frequently out of stock! A side bonus is it is just a bit longer than a stock one so you don't need any special tools to remove it. It is still not lower than the pipes or the belly pan if you have one installed.

A side note:
This site shows many filters that are alternatives to the stock filter. It is an FVR site, but that particular Honda filter is a direct replacement for the Triumph unit as well. The Honda filter is a good quality unit. You might find some of the pictures of the cut-away filters interesting. Also another site that steers very clear of all things Fram!

Oil filter cross reference

HI Scottius

You are not alone. I found a site that had a bunch of info about oil filters and crosses to be used. From the info found there I went with the Purolator PureOne #PL14612, or PL14610. the 14601 is a longer body. Both Work just fine and are just a little longer so I will have less trouble getting it off for a change. $6.00

Wixx and Napa have an equivalent filter #1358 or 51358 depending on who has there name on it but the PureOne filters are supposed to have far better filtering.

Mark

You know, I keep hearing lately how bad Fram oil filters are. My 1977 MGB has had nothing but Farm oil filter on it since it was new. It has 227,000 miles on it and still going strong. Of course I do change the oil every 2,000 miles and put a new Fram filter on every other oil change.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying there aren’t better filters, just that I don’t think the Fram is as bad as we are lead to believe. I’m going to try the Honda filter on the ST next oil change. I hear it’s one of the best.

Not to get into a filter debate, but I had a 78 rabbit that I used nothing but Fram filters and Castrol GTX oil on and it had 180k on it when I sold it and was running purty good...

The dealer had Hi-Flo filters for 6.99 so I traded in the Oh-Fishal filter for that. I got a filter and filter wrench for slightly less than the Oh-Fishal filter alone...sigh...

The Hi-Flo replacement # is HF-191.

I've used Fram oil filters for decades and never had a problem. The last 2 or 3 changes I've been using the Walmart Supertech 6607 on my sprint. Under $2! No problems. I change oil and filters in my cars and bikes every 2,000 miles. The hard working bikes that hold less oil or are air cooled get it more often.
Walmart now has a black plastic wrench for the 6607 filters that is much better than the ones I used to use. It has a metal piece molded right into the area where the 3/8" ratchet goes. It comes on a white card with red and blue logo. I can't remember the brand.

That’s what I’ve been using. Nice tool at an inexpensive price. I have a tin one I played about the same thigh for at Auto Zone. The plastic one is better. :-D
