After a very exciting weekend of riding (27 sportbikes in the group), I got on my bike for the first time this morning. After motoring out of the neighborhood, I hit the main road. Wondering what speed the car in front of me was doing (it appeared slow), I looked down at my speedo. According to it, I wasn't doing any speed at all. According to my tach, I was pulling 4k rpms in 3rd gear. All the way in to work, the speedo registered nothing.

So, before I call the dealership to set up an appointment, where can I look to see what is wrong?

The bike is an '03 Sprint ST according to the paperwork. According to my friends, it is one heavy pig! They are jealous at how I can keep up with them in the twisties on such a bike!!!!!!! :-D

Hi woodrow,
27 Sportbikes in a group that sounds KEWL! I can't even find any Triumph or sport riders around here that want to come out and play. I was supposed to hook up with some folks from NTSR SAturday but no one showed. Too bad too, I did some MAJOR fun rodes around here. Maybe I need to invite my cruiser buds, at least they get off their tooshes and ride.

On to the speedo prob. I remember reading in here abotu an ECU parameter that checks the speedo for errors. I also remember reading that it can cause the exact problem you speak of. Also I think there was something else about the voltage level at the speedo that causes the problem. You might want to do a search on it.

There's are several threads over on T595.net about speedo issues. It seems to be an electrical issue of some sort. Make sure your battery leads are clean and secure.

My speedo went out also, thing to do is ride the bike down the road and pull in the clutch see if the speedo works, another thing to do is grap the brake hard, do that in an empty parking lot, see if the speedo comes up for a second. I had my speedo drive replaced at the dealer and every thing is fine. What happens is I think the wire stretches in the casing causing a break in the wire and by doing these two things it worked and then quit. Also have you had the front tire replaced, if so they may have put the drive in wrong causing the speedo to work for awhile and then quit. Try these things first and see if it works, should be covered under warranty.

Well, the bike is in the shop right now. I didn't have the time to tear it apart or try these things mentioned. What scares is me is that I just changed to 15wt fork oil so the front tire was off and I had a fellow Triumph rider assist in putting it back together. He had the drive side of the tire. :???: I will find out in a couple days.............and I will post up what was wrong.....

My speedometer stopped working on a 1800+ mile ride from Portland to SF to Reno and back. I really don't know how long the trip really was (or how fast I was going most of the time.)

I had to get new tires in SF and my friend's roomate (also an ST rider) recommended KC Engineering. The price was decent and I rode up, hung out for a bit, and - with no appointment - got to new B020s on my bike faster than Les Schwab could have done it.

The problem is that they improperly reassembled the speedo drive and it stripped out and quit working 97 miles later. Cascade Moto confirmed this and I spent $239 (parts & labor) getting it all fixed.

(I was a little ticked, but y'all should know that KC Engineering wanted a receipt and the damaged parts - then they sent me a check for the repairs 24 hours later.)
