Sorry if I missed this in earlier discussions, but if the drag link bolt that is the subject of the recall breaks, how likely is it to cause loss of control and an accident?

I live 600 and 900 miles from my two closest dealers in Anchorage and Seattle; Iwas planning to have the bolt replaced in August in Seattle while I'm touring in the Lower 48, but am thinking maybe I should have a local non-Triumph mechanic fix it sooner if it is really a safety issue.

Thanks,
Jack

Jack,
mine broke on Aug 28 06. I was doing about 120kph on a straight road at the time. I heard a "pting" noise (like a stone puncturing the rear tyre), the bike "sat" or dropped down on it's suspension. I did a ***? And pulled over to the side of the road. I couldn't put the side stand down because the bike had dropped about 1" to 1 1/2" so I had to get a spot with more road camber to help.

I limped the bike the 20k to the nearest town not doing over 40kph (took over 40 mins on a hot day). Besides dropping an inch the whole rear end geometry changes.

I'm heavy about 120kg and do hard riding on all sorts of surfaces. This may have made my failure more likely than that for someone else. That said there ARE assembly and design problems with this setup. Assembly - some weren't sufficiently greased. Design - Triumph are changing the collar/spacer system as part of the recall.

Mine went @ 19000km, I have since done another 13000km on the replacement bolt (but not the recall as this was done in AUg/Sep before the recall), and the bike is still going strong.

Here's a link to the original thread: Link to thread

Here's a link to my pictures of the failed area: Goto to bottom of page for pics on drop link bolt

At a MINIMUM I'd recommend you have the whole drop link assembly, dissassembled, inspected and appropriately greased. If you're doing that AND can get a a dealer to ship the warranty parts, given your distance, then why not do the fix?

Good luck
Russ

Russ, thanks a bunch for your first hand report. I agree, best changed out or at least inspected sooner rather than later.

By the way, I've been to Oz twice in the 80s and 90s, had a great time, I need to get back there one of these days.

Cheers,
Jack
