Shazbat!

I took the tank off my 2003 Sprint ST, and removed the breather / vent hose, leaving the one pipe in place so I wouldn't get confused where they went when I put it back together !

Guess what!
Yup the breather pipe came off and now I don't remember which way around they went.

I've got a plain pipe which goes directly down through the chassis, and another with what looks like an inline filter - this follows the other one - but which one fits on the outlet towards the front of the bike?

Anyone help please?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks,
Will PM Iceman . . .. but in the meantime, is there someway I can check to see which way these pipes fit.

Looks like there's a valve connected inline on one of them, and the other is a straight-thru drain to the ground . . .. can I simply blow up through one of the vents on the bottom of the tank to see if it comes out of the fuel fill hole, or maybe just drip some fuel into the overflow inside of the fuel fill cap?

Would this tell me which one is the stright-thru overflow pipe?

By the way, what's the valve/filter on the other pipe for?

Thanks . . . any help appreciated as I have to get this back together by Tuesday evening.

Steve

Earlier sprints 99-01's manual show the vent/roll over valve (where fitted) on the front of motorcycle and the direct vent line (fuel tank drain) on the rear of the motorcycle. Judging from the links below, chances are very good yours is the same. My bike does not even have one installed.

by the way here are the links to the "Iceman threads"

gas tank vacuum

blocked drain

more drain line info

Hey thanks for the links cm08 . . . . . and with you help I've rectified the situation!

By simply trickling a bit of fuel down the fuel tank - filler overflow (inside of the fuel cap), I managed to ascertain that the overflow (drain) comes from the REAR connector on the r/h underside of the tank - therefore leaving the FRONT conector for the vent (and valve) pipe!

All fixed (and not blocked) now - thanks guys!

The pipe header inside of the fuel tank (the tank breather) should have the roll over valve fitted to the drain to prevent fuel spillage if you lay it down. I'm not quite sure from your last post if you got them the right way round ?

I test it by hooking a hose to one hose barb and blow into it. If it builds pressure that is where the roll over valve goes. If not that is for the overflow. I was confused about this on both my Tiger and RS, I still can't keep it straight so I test it every time I put it back together.

the "filter" is a check valve, and goes on the right side outlet pipe

Awwwww Heck!

So let's get this perfectly clear (for me) - the non-return valve stops the fuel leaking out of the tank in the event the bike is tipped over - is that correct?
ie: it needs to be in the BREATHER line coming out of the inner fuel tank - which is the front of the two outlets under the tank!

I have my pipes connected as per chefjpd's photo . . . the drain is DEFINITELY the left hand pipe on my 2003 Sprint ST (I dribbled a bit of petrol from the fuel tank filler overflow to check).

nortoncharlie, your's seems like a very logical way to test the system, and makes perfect sense. Thanks! So

Sorry guys, but it seems I'm not the only one confused by this issue, so I'd like to clarify it, and put it to bed once and for all!

Drain pipe at rear of tank.
Breather pipe (including non-return valve) to front of tank.

Is this correct?

Cheers,
Steve

HeHe, and now .... those non spill valves for the tank breather are troublesome and sometimes lock shut and you can't get the tank cap off to refill ! some people have just binned them and connected direct. Hence some posters have found theirs doesn't have one fitted. Happened on my 1050 Sprint ! :-D
