First Oil Change - Which Oil & Filter ?

Hi guys,
I'm just thinking of doing my first oil change on my 2003 Sprint ST.
Pretty simple question really, (but I have no users manual with the bike) do I use a Fully Synthetic or Semi Synthetic oil, and how much does the bike hold?

Am I correct in thinking that Triumph recommend Mobil 1? If so why?

Also, are all oil filters(/air filters) pretty much the same or will I need to specify a particular brand/type to my parts supplier too?

The bike has less than 3500km's on it - I presume I don't need new plugs yet?
I'm about to undertake a 3,000km tour will I need to change them when I get back?

As per my handbook specs, Triumph recommend Mobil 1 - 15W40, synthetic or semi synthetic oils, API SH or above. Oil changes are every 10,00km's or yearly. I called Triumph as the dealers here do not even use this oil, and they agreed it didn't matter, but it was more important to keep range of the grade of oil down. IE: stay away from a 5W50.

As I never drive the bike under 0 deg C and I use a garage, I chose to use Castrol Actevo 20W50, semi synthetic, year round. I change oil every 5000 kms. I use a filter from the list in interchangeability list below but normally a triumph or hi flo because they are easy to get in the area but would also consider the honda filter.

As for the plugs, my handbook calls for an inspectionat 20,000kms or 2 years, replacement at 40,000 kms. I replaced them at the inspection interval at 17,500kms even though they still looked OK. I was there anyways doing the valve gaps and plugs are cheap.

the Haynes manual says 'Semi of fully synthetic SAE 10W40 or 15W40 API grade SH.

Dry engine, new filter 4 litres required.

Spark plug gap to be checked at 12000 miles or 2 years and replaced at 24000 miles or 3 years (whichever is sooner.

I take it changing the oil is as simple as warming the engine (10-15 mins), then removing the sump plug and draining the oil before removing the filter, and reversing all the above to complete the job?

Nothing else which may catch me out (newbie here - sorry)?

Do not warm up your engine before draining the oil. All this accomplishes is to spread the contaminants throughout the motor. Change when the bike is cold and everything has settled in the sump.
