Anyone else experience hard starting problems with a warm/hot engine?

Twice on a group ride last weekend after a short period I tried to start the Sprint and it cranked and cranked and cranked before it started. The first time I had to try and start it 3 times before it kicked over (cranking for about 5 seconds each time)
I did experience slight hard starting when cold in the early morning but nothing like this.

Anyone else run into this?

Was your engine still quite warm, but the coolant temperature indicated cold? That can be the case sometimes in very cold weather after a hard ride and short stop. The Sprint seems not to like this situation, the ECU seems to get confused thinking the bike is cold when it's not.

I find the trick in this case is to persist on the button rather than let it go after 5 seconds.

Wonder if they have fixed this issue on the 07 model.

Regarding hard start from cold the trick has been mentioned here lots of times before.

Open the throtlle about 20%, press the starter switch, let go of the throttle after the starter motor has cranked it a couple of times. Don't keep the throttle open until it starts.

Welcome to my world

Mine has been doing it since day one. Not bad when to air temp is warm, but on cold mornings, it won't start. I keep a tender on the battery so I can crank it in the mornings.

the 2007 model has chaged the ECU to fix the problem.

A hint:

twist the throttle 25% when cranking...

then release. Just when it snaps back...Vroom

Weird. I do it all the time. Someone posted it awhile ago, and it really works.

"Problem."

A problem is hitting rocks while leaned over at 60 mph and starting to slide. A few extra seconds of cranking is merely an annoyance, and an idiosyncrasy. It eventually cranks and by that I mean within 10-15 seconds of the first attempt, even at it's worst, so not a problem.

Um...I don't know how many motorcycles you've had in your life Longpath but I've NEVER had or heard of a "modern" bike acting like this...it's not "normal" for a bike to take this long and multiple trys to start with a warm or hot engine. Mine did not start after 10 or 15 seconds of cranking.
It may not be a problem to you but it sure is for me.
Look at your watch's second hand and picture yourself cranking the starter for 10 or 15 seconds, NOT just ONCE but MULTIPLE times, besides possibly OVERHEATING the starter and shortening it's life it's rediculous to have to wait that long for a modern motorcycle to start like that with a warm motor.....it may have been a freak occurance (maybe some bad fuel or something) because it's never done this before and I have 6,000 miles on the bike.

Thats why I was curious as to if anyone else experienced this.

BTW....the fact that TRIUMPH has improved or changed the ECU on the new '07's PROVES there was a problem, if there wasn't they wouldn't have changed it!

And one more thing....I didn't ask weather you thought my problem was a problem or not, I asked if anyone else experienced this "warm/hot" hard starting to see if it's just my bike or not.

SoCalSprint,
for the record and just to keep this in perspective.

I have had a bunch of bikes and I also have not had that problem.

However I also have not had this issue with my '04 Sprint 955i.

The only time mine was hard to start was in the morning in Armadale on a trip when it was -5 degrees Celsius and it started second stab of the button then fired.

Right Dave, I know about the "cold" hard starting and can live with that, but the "warm/hot" hard starting shouldn't be happening....like I said it may have been a freak occurance and I hope so cuz I really like the Sprint!

SoCal,

Did you try the technique I suggested?

Ok, my apologies, I have rarely had the problem with a warm Sprint, but it's endemic to cold ones. I think I had it happen once when it was warm and yeah it worried me, but I must have 10k more on it now without the issue. I think the computer just gets confused sometimes...I can cause my bike to stall (turn completely off, with the clutch in) just about anytime I want once it's warm...with the "proper" technique. I'd say see if it sorts itself out before worrying too much.

Haven't ridden it yet since last weekend.
I've used that technique on a cold engine, but not a warm one.
