Hey,
I've about had it with Triumph.
Bought a new RS in '00 and had nothing but trouble with it.
About every topic in this forum i've had.

Now the engine is burning oil. It has been since I bought it but the problem was never tackled, even after a triumph headquarters intervention!

Cyl.1 : 7, cyl.2 : 9.5 cyl.3 : 10.6. Normal compression ratio should be 11,2 :1

An engine overhaul is long overdue.

A letter to Triumph headquarters remains unanswered. Info to the dealer : no reply.

I will now have it serviced outside the Triumph dealer network and hope to find a solution to the oil consumption (0,665 liter to 1000 kms)

Here in the states, we used to say, don't buy a car made on Monday or Friday. Cause on Monday they would be hungover from the weekend and on Friday they would be more interested in getting out the door to party.

It unfortunately appears that you got a lemon (one of those preverbial monday or friday machines). I haven't had any issues with my ST, except for a broken fuel connector. My dealer had it back to me, fixed along with a few extra pieces of work I requested in less than 48 hours.

I hope the factory works out the issues with your RS.

I like what Triumph has done, and I want to see them continue on. But it appears that they still need to work on customer service and support.

It's some what ironic that you have several very old motorcycles and the one that you have a problem with is the new one. Anyway, how many miles do you have on your "00" RS? I would have aksed about your valve adjustments but if it's burnning oil that's out. What about the break in peroid, do you know its history? I know my ST used the "running in oil" during the first 600 miles and then I switched to the full synthetic, per the manual. My thought is if the wrong oil had been used for the first 500 to 600 miles the rings may not have seated correctly. You might consider reservicing with the running in oil for a while and see if things improve. Keep us posted if you would! Have a great day.

How did they check for compression? I'm assuming that they just did a PSI check and then averaged what a new cylinder would be to get your compression. You figure out compression by taking the internal measurements using deck height, piston height, gasket thickness, stroke and head volume. It's a mechanical ratio from total cylinder volume when the piston is at BDC to what's left at the top of the piston when it's at TDC.

Doing what they did won't you anything other than the cylinders aren't balanced. Have them do a leak-down test which is just about as easy to do as what was done but this will tell you exactly what the problem is. You will find out what percentage of air is lost and where it's going. Intake valve, exhaust valve or blow by the rings or head gasket leak.

Remember these are mechanical things and stuff happens.

Sorry about the network not responding yet. Hammer them some more.

Superpurlut, did you try another dealer?

I'm very happy with Motor Services Sterckx in Bertem.

A bit out of your sector....
