I was reading a post about the center stands and also the post about the dealers problems was wondering about how to maintain simple stuff on my own. Someone posted something about oiling the chain? Is this a BMX bike??? These are things I know nothing about, but once I do it, i got it. So, what do you guys (and gal) do for normal upkeep and maintenance on your bike? I love my RS and want to keep it a long time...

I've found my ST to be relatively maintenance free. With that said, and a caveat to boot, here is what I have done/did;

1) Clean and oil the chain on a regular basis. I cleaned my chain probably every second to third fillup About 400 to 700 miles. I lubed the chain approximatly every 200 miles. Now I have a chain oiler so that's mostly history

2) Change oil at the suggested interval.

3) Check the chains/sprocktes for wear on a regular basis

4) Check the tire pressure on a regular basis. It does make a big difference on wear and drivability.

IMO most maintenance is common sense.

These bikes as Tom said are pretty maintenance and trouble free. As you can see by the other threads most are interested in how to modify their bikes.

Most for the maintenance issues revolve pre-flight activities and cleaning.

I'm not one that really takes care of the chain but it does get lubed and cleaned occasionally. There are many ways to do this. I use kerosene to clean and Motul to lube. Kerosene (parafin) for the Brits here cleans well and won't harm anything and is recommended by the factory. Motul and others like it are a waxy lube with a drying agent. It goes on thin but drys to a waxy substance that clings. IT also sheds water and dirt. I put it on at night so it will dry and minimize fling off.

I use Protect All on about everything. Works great and is easy to use. Like a spray on wax. I use Plexus to clean the screen and visor. Blue Magic on the shiny metal parts.

I rarely give it a bath but dry clean her. Final Inspection will get the bug splats off better than anything with no rubbing nor harm to any finishes.

Don

I'm probably anal about oil changes and tire pressures.

I change oil and filter every 3k and tire pressures all the time.

There should be no drips of any fluids.
Other than that normal servicing.

Thanks Guys, I figured that, but it never hurts to ask. I have learned more in this forum than anywhere else. Thanks everyone. BTW, I am going on a trip from Sacramento CA to Alteras CA this weekend. Its going to roughly be about a 600 mile round trip. My father-in-law and me are going up the Sierra Nevada's all the way up...this is my first long ride...should be an awesome trip. I will take pics and post them...cheers everyone...
