Being new to the bike world in general, and completely new to the world of faired bikes, I have the following question...

Are frame sliders a good addition? Will they help in a parking lot drop scenario? Also, any downside to them.

Recommendations for a good brand/place to buy would be appreciated, too!

Thanks

I had a low Almost "0" speed drop a year ago. If I had the sliders on nothing would have gotten a scratch. As it was just a few light minor one on the right side gill. If I had the Sky King sliders on that were in my shop that wouldn't have happened.

There have been some mention that they may break off the engine mount ears but I have never heard of a specific or confirmed instance of this. I have heard of them saving the body work in some pretty wicked lowsides though. And there was a local that has dropped theirs several times with no ill effect other than to ego. This person is real short and it is really no fault of their's.

If it's a high side forget it.

I had the Sky King sliders put on my ST when I bought it, and it was a good thing because two weeks later I dropped it in the garage.

There was no damage except to the slider itself which was bent pretty severely. The bolt stud was the thing that bent which crushed one side of the aluminum barrel that holds the slider itself against the frame. I bought a single slider directly from Sky King for $25. The dealer insisted on selling me the kit of two for $50. Putting the slider on was very simple and took maybe 10 minutes. You have to reach behind the frame with a box end wrench while turning the bolt head on the outside with a ratchet and socket. Do one side at a time.

The sliders for the ST are very long, compared to the ones for the Speed Triple, for example; so it's no wonder that they can be bent fairly easily. I don't think they'd be much use in a slide at speed.

The mechanic who put on the original sliders said that he didn't really recommend them because of the possible damage they could do to the frame. For that reason, the other customer who was in the same conversation decided not to put sliders on his bike.

Hi Falsten,
Get the sliders! I have had two low speed tip overs and other than a couple of scratches the bike is without damage. Just having to repaint one of those panels will cost a heck of a lot more than the sliders.

PS I have Sky Kings on mine also.

which sliders would you guys suggest for an '01 ST.

I was checking out the LSL ones and I think they look nice...but to be honest I haven't seen any others to compare them to.
