I just got my bike back from its 20k service. All is well and its running very nicely, just in time for the Triumph Rally.

The service manager, (Shane at Teammoto Blacktown for those in Oz), told me that my air filter was partially clogged with a sticky gloop. He has seen a few 05+ ST's like this but so far no idea what it is.

Has anyone else had this and any idea what it could be?

Brett.

Yes Brett I am now on third air filter having clocked up 39,000ks the air filter go the same way as on Holden Commodore V6 motors.

At $77 it time to think about a KN, BMC air filter.

PS on my trip to the Port raid I recycle my air filter (by cleaning out the crude).

Good to be back on the web site, been a bit boring without my daily dose of triumphrat.net

Hey Brett there is another after market air filter DNA supplied by the importer for Wisco piston etc, was not available at the time.

Anyway on a different subject on Sunday when for a ride up the Putty towards Windsor (meet up with Russ Cook), the 18T front sprocket makes the Sprint so smooth through the tight twisties, corner speed is so much better, feels like a different bike.

Hard to believe this would make such a difference.

How did you recalibrate the speedo after changing to the 18t?

I havent done that yet.

I would like to borrow someones GPS to test its accuracy.

Brett.

Brett, Shane at Team Moto showed me my air filter as well and it was also partially blocked. I guess it means they're doing their job. I can understand mine, I've done about 200K of dirt mixed in to the last 10000K of riding :-) .

Russ
p.s. getting jealous of all these 18T stories on the 05/06 Sprints. Might have too look into it :-) RE: the speedo calibration - good question. Other bikes I've changed sprockets on had no way of doing this and I don't know what's possible. Anyone got any feedback on that for the 05/06?

I can understand there being an amount of crud collected on the air filter, I've seen this on plenty of vehicles, but what makes it a sticky gloopy mess? It suggests its getting mixed with fuel or something, but this seems very unlikely.

As for the speedo, there are various methods you could use to recalibrate, but I just find a way of measuring the acccuracy, such as GPS, and attach small markers to the speedo face to show the important speeds - 60, 80, 110 etc.

Having done a few miles with the 18t sprocket, I reckon I will go up two teeth on the rear sprocket as well next time around.

Come over to the dark side Russ

:lgh:

Det - you will just have to rack up the miles to get through that chain. We'll be waiting for you :chug: :-g

Brett.

Beach,

I just had my 12,000 mile service and my filter was clogged with some sort of oily goop, mostly in the center of the filter. The service manager asked me if I had been racing my bike on a dirt track :-D Seriously though, I'm going to change it myself next time and replace it with a K&N filter. There must be oil or fuel gettting in there somehow to make that sort of mess. Have you ever dropped your bike? Mine has fallen over on the right side once. I was wondering if that caused the problem....

Mine looked dry, just full of dirt. So I don't know what the oily stuff could be other than blow back/rich mixture or maybe oil if it was dropped as targetdude has said.

Is the crankcase breather routed back into the air filter area to meet emission ?
