My Etrex Legend has been sitting around being useless....I started looking for mounts and came across:

Expensive

and

Also Expensive

and

Cheap

I don't think mounting it on the handle bars is the best location, instead I'm looking at the 1" tube right below the cluster (right above the horn).

Has anyone else done anything similar? Any pics?

thanks

I think you set a record in shortest time to reply

I guess you're happy with the setup? Any place cheap to get one?

I have the 3rd option which i use on my bicycle. The eTrex are known for shutting off randomly due to vibration. It shuts off all the time on my bicycle, can't imagine it being any better on a motorcycle.

I have a buddy who works for Garmin, and he says they don't know why this happens and that I should have gotten a more expensive model (retail on the eTrex Vista was close to $300 when I got it).

Next time I am buying a Trimble......

I've got over 10k miles on the setup pictured above and the eTrex has never had a problem.

dart330 - Is that what is is?! Vibration? I have an eTrex Legend, and it turns off all the time on me, and I could never figure out what caused it! I ruled out batteries, and wondered about vibration, but I didn't realize it actually had some kind of sensor. I guess there's nothing I can do but buy a better GPS, or try to isolate the vibrations?

To get back to the original post, I use a RAM mount as well, on an 06 ST. The holster that holds the GPS is kind of weak because you have to bend the plastic tabs at the top to put the GPS into place. Because of this bending, the right tab on my holster broke off, so now the thing jiggles all over the place (although I also had the vibration/turn off problem before it broke!).

I have pictures near the bottom of this page...

This is what I used to mount my Garmin Quest...
http://gpsforless.stores.yahoo.net/motbracforga.html
Base Plate II atop the bracket that screws into the handlebar mounting bolts. Search around here, you'll find it...but expensive.
A GPS may cut out if the power is interrupted, use di-electric grease at ALL your connections.

Well I take 20 mile bicycle trips to the local winery and I got the GPS mount just to keep track of how far along I am and my average speed. I look down every once in a while and the unit would be off, it would always come back on, but I had no idea why it was shutting off.

My Garmin buddy was in town, saw my eTrex and randomly asked me if it ever shuts off on me. I told him all the time on my bike. We looked at the batteries, tight as can be, and I am riding on a flat bike trail when it happens. He said they didn't know why it was happening, but it is caused by vibration. So I guess the new models do it too? Maybe it is a random defect? Whatever it is it pisses me off!

I have the standard Etrex and I just shove it in the map pocket of my Bagster Tankbag. You can`t get a cheaper mounting than that and it has never shut down on me due to vibration. I only really use it to check speed/distance.
